Hey guys! i have never played a smash until Smash4 and i wanted to know.
when i should dodge and when i should block.

i dont see the difference.... i know there is one tho! i can feel it in online and see it in competitive play but i can't wrap my head around it during battle and after battle.

i know to dodge when coming down from Usmash but other then that! im clueless to projectiles, dashes, smashes and grabs....

Over explanations would be appreciated! (videos and older threads as-well)
Thanks in advance!

It's mostly up to judgement... Both shielding and roll dodging projectiles works, just in different situations. Shield dash attacks or shorthop aerials then shield grab. I usually roll away from grabs but I'm sure that's not the correct hing to do. Both shielding and rolling works on smash attacks, just do whatever gives you a better opportunity to punish. Just don't roll dodge down smashes.

In the end it really is gonna come down to your playstyle as well as how well you read your opponent. For example, lets say I'm playing friendly Bo3 as bowser and the first match I lose due to shielding too much, which my opponent takes advantage of and grapples the hell out of me. Now that I've got an idea as to how he plays and how he might react to me playing bowser again, the next round I might opt to spot dodge his grabs into up b, d-smash, pivot grab, or a plethora of other options. The usage of shielding versus dodging is situational depending on the MU as well as the players. As a general rule for myself, if the enemy starts getting all touchy-feely with them grabs I'll opt out to dodge, and vise versa if they're gonna try to bait out dodges for punishes.
