I am assuming this is not going to show up until 2015. At the latest, you can expect this to come when Mewtwo comes. At the earliest, who knows?

Well, it could come with Mewtwo. Or later.
But it seems worth the wait, 64 players online sounds insane.

Is there any news about an offline tournament mode? Why did they even remove it?

I think they're still working on it. There will probably be an offline tournament mode. If not, well, oh well right? There are other ways to bracket for local things

the 50 fact extravaganza promised a local and online tournament mode. As well as online custom stage sharing, mewtwo, and the miiverse stage.

I don't expect it before the Mewtwo update, but I'd be pleased if we got it sooner.
Yeah.

Although, I'll bet these modes have been in development for a good amount of time. In fact, if they'd had more time to develop the game, I'm near positive the game would've shipped with the modes+Mewtwo+Miiverse Stage.

They've been developing this game for nearly two years (Sakurai finished Kid Icaurs Uprising before this game) and so they had a limited schedule, especially since they were making effectively two games. Sure, they run on the same engine and there are few differences in the core gameplay, but modes take a while to develop, and I hear the architectures are different between Wii U and 3DS.

I'll bet that at some point, Nintendo put a deadline on the game and said "you can patch in more content later!" So they decided that Tourney's and other modes (such as Replay Sharing, Tournaments, etc.) were dispensable.

So I'd assume that Tourney's will come soon than you'd think, and I think the Mewtwo update is probably the latest we'll see it.

True enough. I guess with Nintendo being somewhat new in the patching business, we'll have to see whether they decide to release it as it's ready, or wait until they have a larger batch of things ready. Other things like server capacity, whether or not any balance patches will be attached to Mewtwo (none planned, as Sakurai stated, but they've got a few months), et cetera, would determine whether or not they keep it as a bunch or release them at separate times.

Personally, I'm fine with waiting for some extra content as long as the base content is extensive enough (as it basically always is with Nintendo).

The main thing I'm interested in seeing is how robust Tournament Mode is. Large-entrant single elimination is fun and all, but it'd get a lot more use if it included options for more rulesets, character changing, and so on.

Yeah, I agree. That would make online tournaments soo much less of a pain.

That said, I always had a good time doing those kinds of tourneys with my friends in brawl, so it isn't required. But it would be nice.

I enjoy them as well, but it would also make physical tournament management much easier if most everything you need is right there in the game. Wouldn't really help larger tournaments across multiple setups, but it can make for easier management of smaller events.

Exactly.

I wouldn't put it passed them to ignore making it more robust, HOWEVER, they're clearly aware of how big competitive smash bros is, so I wouldn't be shocked to hear that they'd added like Double Elimination or something like that.
