Hi, so I'm not the best smash bros player... But I'm not sure how to know that, I don't go to tournaments and I probably won't.

I just wanted to know if I'm really "Good" at smash, and when I say good, I mean good enough to go to a tournament

P.S You can drop some tips in if you'd like! :3

There's not a skill level or a requirement to attend a tournament. So you can't be "good enough" to go to a tournament.

That being said, it depends on how you view it. You're probably extremely good against friends and strangers in casual play, but competitively, you haven't seem to received a taste at all, so you're probably a little below average.

I've been thinking the same thing lately, I think playing it online will answer that for me when the game comes out.

A great way to tell how good you are is to get out there and try. No better way to check your skill than to go to a real life tournament and try your best. They're also very good learning experiences as well.

Well isn't that just a pickle then. Honestly telling your skill level based on online play is pretty hard. Even though Smash 4's online is much smoother than brawl's it's still different than offline play. Playing online with a wide variety of people from here on smashboards would still be a good start.

It will match you to players of the same level, though, so it may still be hard to tell

If you're interested in finding an organized area to both test your skills and compete in tournaments, feel free to join a Super Smash Clan. Once the game comes out, you'll find groups of Smashers in much the same boat as you, training with each other in preparation for a variety of smaller tournaments amongst other clans we'll be frequently providing. It's a great place to meet other board members on a much smaller scale and improve your skill without the hassle of travel.

And, if you act now, you'll be sent a FREE bag of chips with your purchase!

Here's the link for you to follow at your leisure: http://smashboards.com/social-forums/super-smash-clans.1749/

You should considering joining some tournaments, either locally (if possible) or even from this site. It would be a great way to test your skill, and see exactly where you stand. Bearing in mind not everyone here is a competitive player, but it does make for great practice, and that is exactly what I plan on doing.

It's pretty relative, to be honest. Every now and then you'll reach points where you go "wow, I'm really getting better" or pull something off and realize "hey, I never would've been able to do that a couple months ago". Beyond that, though, it's more a steady line of progress than a bunch of jumps in skill level. Seeking out some kind of community always helps, to have more people to play against...although with your situation, it'd have to be online.

There is one point when you know you're starting to become skilled, though: when you aren't button mashing any longer. That first step is getting to the point where every move and action you make in battle is intentional.

Level 9 cpus only get you so far. Take it online as soon as you feel you're confident enough. It also helps to participate in some tournaments, online or otherwise. Online is easy but you should research some local tournaments in your area.

TL;DR Play against people and see where you stack.

Uh, not really. CPUs are nothing like, and will NEVER be like a human player. CPUs read your controls and react based on that, while human players actually have a brain. CPUs don't analyse anything mid-match, they just try to kill you.

True but Level 9 cpus are actually good practice for what you can and cant do. When CPUs react based on what you do, it makes it so that you have to adapt with faster button presses and smarter spacing lest you take a fully charged reflected F-Smash to the face. You don't. You'll never be good at Smash because there's always someone better than you. And someone better than him. And someone better than her too. And so on.

Well my brothers/friends can't touch me 1v1...

We had a few tournies here and I wrecked them and they stopped due to that.

I barely lost to an employ at a game shop in melee (main game is brawl)

I'm hoping to really get my ass kicked in For Glory. :D

Lvl 9 CPUs are not bad but I wouldn't consider them as good practice after you get good enough to defeat them easily. They can inhibit bad habits and aren't really that great. They are no substitute for humans.

I personally have no problems with level 9s but I've been playing smash since the 64 days so I've been playing for like 17 years. Competitively on and off for like 6 years. I've been playing since I was 8 or so.

I am too. I've learned that the hard way...

xD but don't give up. Pay attention to the advanced techniques that people learn to figure out. Practice them. Practice with other people. Lv 9 CPU can only take you so far. Don't become what I have become!

The best way to get better is here actually. If u play online with random players then they will only do spaming techniques and roll and block. They will teach u both good and bad habits. If u play with people who want to be or are competitive then u will start seeing advance techniques that u can learn and adapt to.

Here is a clan system where u can test your skills and other players join a small group of fans of smash bros who want to be competitive just like you. http://smashboards.com/social-forums/super-smash-clans.1749/

I've been playing sense the 64 days too and I've been playing competitively for about 6-7 years. I know that Level 9s aren't good replacements for people but they are good for getting you ready at least. It's not as easy to spam attacks on something that reads them and counters them with deadly efficiency.
