Once Brawl is released, many of us are going to try to get as good as we can, as fast as we can, in order to keep up with the top players. That goes without saying.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But there are two different ways to get to the top of your game...

First way: You try your best to figure out who is going to be/seems to be top tier, and practice the hell out of them to get your technical skill down. Many people i ask, say that if they would have known about the tiers of how broken space animals are in melee, they would have started working on fox/falco from day one. This is what the majority votes for.

Second way: You find a character you really like, who best fits your playstyle and who you think is "cool." Reguardless of what tier they might fit in later, you dedicate your smash-life to perfecting this one character and competiting for the best _(insert character )_ in the world. Not many people agree with this way of play and many who did this in melee, regret not picking up what seems to be "the essential space animal/high tier."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I for one have played samus from almost the beginning and I'm still playing her to this day. If i had known about future tiers when i started, i wouldn't have changed my mind. (maybe would have thought different if i had picked pichu as a main) What about you? Do you try for the easiest route to the top, or do you likk to struggle knowing you will be admired for sticking to your guns?

The second one definitely. I don't care if I win or lose, as long as I'm having fun. I started out with Fox in SSB, and now I am good with him. Even without any flashy moves or techniques, I still do just fine.
If you play any character long enough and like that character, you're going to get good.

Ill choose the second one. I mean hey people use to think ice climbers sucked but look at them now. I believe every char has hidden potential Esp fox. I mean seriously wave shine was just waiting to be discovered and other techs as well. A characters potential may not be as great as that of fox but if Azen can win a tournament as pichu and then that shows us how if we have a enough skill we can win matches with any char. However it won't hurt to know how to play as a high tier char because their is always gonna be some1 with more skill than you.

I'd choose the 2nd one, too. I don't care if my favorite character is considered the worst from the tiers. It's all about skill. Just wait. There will be this Mewtwo player that will 4 stock Ken.:smiliegor

A combination of both, which is why this topic is rather useless.

Example- Mewtwo is by far my favorite character in melee, but even from initially unlocking him I could tell he was a bad character balance-wise. So I went with other characters I liked who had more potential, those were Doc and Pikachu. Pika ended up being ***, so now Doc is my main with Marth assist. In Brawl I'll play the characters I find fun initially, and pick the one I think has the best chance of being a 'good' character, practice with them. No one is really going to exclusively do 1 or 2.

Not necessarily true. For example, i play a lot with Eddie, who played ganon since the beginning, and got exceptionaly good with him. On the other hand i play with Cunning Kitsune also, who plays fox/falco only since he find no reason to play non-high tier characters.

What you just described was, you like low tier characters, but since you found out they couldn't do much against other, higher tier characters, you moved to another one (i.e. doc/marth) You're simply climbing the tier ladder until you found one that can compete. There are pikachu/mewtwo/etc players out there that would certainly give any tier a run for their money. That's becasue of their dedication to their choice.
