What's the point of doing a dash canceled grab?

Whats the point of doing a dash canceled grab?
I'm not even sure thats the name for it but that shows how little I know about it
I think it's when you are dashing and you do a shield grab
Could someone verify?

I think the shielding stops the dashing, and that way you can do a standing grab. Some running grabs, if I'm not wrong, have more lag time and less range when running.

Not every character benefits from this. Some are better off dash grabbing. (Samus, anyone?)
