What's the best way to get involved in the competitive scene?

I've been following tournaments and pro smashers for the past two years, but I have never actually tried to get involved in a tournament until now. What's the best way to get involved. Should I just register and show up, or should I play online with some pros beforehand to get better? What's the common opinion?

Also, I'm a minor, so my parents are another factor in this. I can't just go to a tournament without letting them know where the car and I will be all day.

Thanks in advance :)

You know, I seem to have a similar question, except that I seem to be a little more dependent. I've already been to tournaments with pros and all, large ones, sure I never won any of them, but hey, experience still counts as something. I hope this generation things change.

Hell, I can't even find any in my area. You all are lucky.
You live in Montana, right? lol no wonder...
I don't want to get involved on the proffesional level. I just play for fun with friends, even though I have won quite a bit of money :chuckle: I would recommend to first play in local tournaments and get well known, then go into larger ones.

play good people in tournemant, without worrying about the outcome. just play and youll get better
This.

Play with friends and by yourself to learn the basics of your character. All the tricks and combos and basic information.

Then, go to tournaments and just play as much as you can. Just about everyone will play you for multiple games, and you'll learn a lot. If you are worried no one will play you, bring $1 bills and say "Anyone $1 money match" and you'll get many takers.

Just play, do your best to win, and if you ever get rocked ask for advice.

Here's the best advice

1.) Simply go to tournaments.
2.) Try to play a variety of people online, keep tabs on who is good. Don't bother playing over and over with players who are much worse than you. Always keep other good players on your Friend's list.

Here's the thing about Smash. You can put a lot of time into it and walk away not very good.

What makes you better at the game is playing better players and not playing lazy. Not playing lazy means your always trying to improve your tech skill and you spend every multiplayer round trying to develop better mindgames (being aware of what your doing and your habits as well as analyzing your opponent and predicting what you think he's going to do based on patterns he shows, etc).

That being said, Smash doesn't have stat tracking and neither do tournaments. It doesn't matter if you show up and lose at at tournament.

Every tournament I've gone to involves a small group of players who don't know anything about the tournament scene and get their *** handed to them. But you know what, they probably improved a lot.

You learn a lot by watching and playing better players, tournaments are perfect ways to do that. That's where new tactics show up first and good players show off what's possible.

But most important:

Keep in mind its not always about winning. Play to get better. If you're always aiming to improve you'll probably find your winning a lot more.

Yeah, I'm very interested in the tournament scene but I'm having trouble getting connected up with tournaments . I go to school in the middle of nowhere in New York (nowhere near a city) and the Mass scene doesn't look that awesome from the forum browsing I've done. And I don't have a car. I guess I'll just have to wait.

Maybe in the summer there will be more tournies, but what if they conflict with my job? I just don't know if I can do it... =(

I live right by Houston and San Antonio. This local game store is hosting a tournament tomorrow night, then another one the day after that. So if I win these, i'll be sponsored with my friend to go to larger, more competitive tournaments in Houston.

1) Go to local tournaments. Check in your region in Regional Zones for info.
2) Play against others in said tournaments.
3) ????
4) PROFIT!
