Most of my friends say that Smash Bros isn't a real fighting game and that its a 4 player party beat em up game. IMO its a fighting game but I'd like to here some of your opinions as to Smash Bros' genre.

Yeah... I know the genre but I can't think of the exact name.

But yeah it's a beat 'em up.

Then your friends are stupid, what exactly are you doing in Smash? Fighting with Nintendo characters, hear that? FIGHTING with Nintendo characters, just tell them that.

I agree it's more party oriented than games like Negima?! or Battle Bladers, or something like that, but other than that, and it's unusual rule set, it's no less than a fighting game.

there is already a thread on this someplace...

but Smash Bros Brawl = fighter
Smash Bros Subspace Emissary = platformer

as a whole, the game is being categorized as an Action game.

I like the term Fighting Platformer based on the format (Jump Superstars, Konami Fighter Mix, Battle Arena D.O.N and Powerstone also fit into this genere). However this is a just term I use to distinguish it from traditional 2D and 3D fighters.

I agree with platform fighter.

Being able to get back on the ground in smash or keeping your opponent from doing so is HOW you win. To do that, you do things you wouldn't normally do while fighting. Heck, some moves are ONLY useful in accomplishing that task. Making that Metagame almost as key as the actual fighting portion of the game. It's such a big focus, and a focus not found in fighting games, that one almost has to acknowledge it when defining the game. Throwing the term "arena" on it at least denotes the importance of the arena... the fact that they're usually, to scale, larger... amongst other things.

I agree with Stompy on this one. This is a Nintendo game, folks. Genres are bent all the time with this one.

Race To The Finish= Racing Game
Adventure Mode= Platforming Game
Actual Fighting= Fighting Game
Good Playing= Strategy Game

I declare that Smash Brothers Series is a Strategic Platform Fighting Game with a dash of Racing. Brand new category of games, that will end up being copied in the next couple of... Wait? Jump Ultimate Stars? Already? Dag, that was quick.

Have them watch Screwattack's top 10 fighters of all time.

Melee made 3rd. I was surprised.

Over there
Smash is to awsome to be in one specific genre and putting in with regular games is insulting. I agree with ozz3000.
