Most of my friends say that Smash Bros isn't a real fighting game and that its a 4 player party beat em up game. IMO its a fighting game but I'd like to here some of your opinions as to Smash Bros' genre.

I can beat people up with my mind. I'm assuming your friends can't do that so I'm going with fighting. How can you beat something up without fighting?
Dark Symphony on gamefaqs said:Being able to get back on the ground in smash or keeping your opponent from doing so is HOW you win. To do that, you do things you wouldn't normally do while fighting. Heck, some moves are ONLY useful in accomplishing that task. Making that Metagame almost as key as the actual fighting portion of the game. It's such a big focus, and a focus not found in fighting games, that one almost has to acknowledge it when defining the game. Throwing the term "arena" on it at least denotes the importance of the arena... the fact that they're usually, to scale, larger... amongst other things.
