I read the DI thread here on smashboards last night and it really opened my eyes to what i wasn't doing in terms of DI, SDI, teching ect. I started playing against lvl 7, 8, 9 zelda and random underneath hyrule castle and just SDI/teched when she hit me at high percents. Then i realized thats like the only stage with a box area where i can tech off of a low roof and should be practicing sdi-ing and teching down for the most part.

What is a good stage, CPU and CPU level to practice this on?

Any other input is greatly welcomed as well, thanks!

with either of these methods i do it seems to work randomly. Heres where Im slightly confused:

1. place bomb on side of SEE jungle.

2. jump down and up-b into bomb.

3. Ok, do I smash the c-stick towards the stage and press L right before the explosion, during, or what? ive been trying to press them right at the start of the explosion and it seems to work 1 out of 10 times, so i know im doing something wrong.

During. You know how you freeze for a split second after you are hit? Like after Falcon's knee, for example. You need to SDI during that split second where your character is frozen in place, but before they actually go flying off.

Just wondering, what character are you using?

As for the method, edgeteching is basically using Smash DI (SDI'ing) to come into contact with the stage during hitlag and teching off of that contact. As Burnsy said, SDI can only be done during hitlag, the moment where your character freezes while you get hit. While you can use the C-stick for SDI, you can also use the control stick if that feels more comfortable to you. As for the tech, you need to press L or R at least 20 frames (1/3rd of a second) before you come into contact with the stage from the SDI. In other words, the inputs are up+B -> L/R (tech; right before you get hit) -> C-stick or control stick into the stage (SDI; while you get hit).

While it's a bit out-dated, Doraki's Guide to DI is a great reference for teching and DI'ing if you have any more questions.

I've asked this before but I forgot so I'll ask it again. Does P:M have a fail window that locks you out if you try to tech too early? In other words, is anything stopping people from just mashing L/R to get the tech?

Yes, it has a similar fail-window to Melee. I had this (very) wrong before, but there are two windows that occur when you press R/L - a 20-frame "tech" window where you'll tech into a surface if you impact one within 20 frames and a 40-frame "tech-fail" window in which the game will not recognize R/L as tech inputs. These windows start at the same time - for example, if you hit L/R at frame 1, hit L/R again at frame 30, and touched the ground at frame 35, you will still miss the tech because the second L/R input was during the 40-frame "tech-fail" window from the first L/R input.

If I'm misunderstanding techs again, SOMEONE PLEASE CORRECT ME.

I was using Mario/wolf to practice, but I usually play random.

And Oh ok that makes a lot of sense, i was trying to press c-stick and L at the same time. thats probably why it seemed to work only some of the time. Thanks!

Take this code and add it to the ".gct" how to do that, you'll have to figure out yourself.

This code will cause all cpu's to repeatedly use utilt. Be sure to make a copy of your original gct before adding the code or you'll have to download it again.

So does P:M change that the C-stick is only used for ASDI?
because then using the C-stick to try SDIing is kinda useless...

hold c-stick in preferred position and smash the controllstick. Press L/R just before you get hit and hold the button. at least for me that helped me time it alot better.

Is this in the wrong thread? It seems kind of random and I just don't want you to think that you responded to the intended thread when you didn't >.>.
