What would people think of me if I went to a tourney and used a 3DS controller?

I think people would look at you as less of a threat because theyd think your more of a casual player than a competitive player.

Oh. the thing is, I'm signed up for apex wii u singles, and if I had a wii u I'd be practicing with a GC controller but I only have a 3ds to practice smash 4

Personally, I think it's ridiculous to disregard players because of their choice of controller. It's your weapon, and if you can whack people with it then that's all that matters.

People view GC controllers as the ideal, but they really don't/shouldn't care what controller you use.
Personally I'd be afraid of damaging a 3ds because it's so expensive, and easy to break compared to the GC ones.

Do you have the 3ds 'new' with the C stick option? If you don't then I would think you are limiting yourself but if you beat me or a player better then me, no johns.

People may look at you as a ******, that's true. Those are stupid.

Though I must say 3DS is probably the worst input option for a Smash tourney, but if that's your case, I believe it's your best option. Then, why not?

Just get good using the 3DS. In the fighting game community (street fighter in particular) the people using controllers are normally the players you need to be weary of because they have to work harder to get good which can in the long run make them a much more dangerous player because they most likely put more effort in.

Like many have already said, a controller is a controller. If your ideal preference and you're actually able to beat people with it, well then there isn't much they can say to you. That being said the 3DS is one of the most unpopular controller preferences for a reason especially the 3DS without a c stick, and if you haven't compared it to the other types of controllers (wii u pro, gamecube) then I'd highly recommend you do so.

You'll probably get some funny looks for using it and then for slowing the tournament down because of having to go to the 3DS button to set up your controller, but I don't think people will think too horribly of you if you're good.

New3DS isn't out in the US until 2015.
Jealous of Japan and their 3DS skins as well..
I was considering buying one, but WiiU version is so great that I'm reconsidering it.
That, and the fact that most of my down time is at home anyway.

Scenes are usually pretty accepting of new players, I think. It's kinda cool to see the Smash community grow.
There's always trash talk going on though. Ignore that, I guess.
I think Hbox Retweeted once around that time with "Karissa the Destroyer", about some kid in Florida who was beating experienced regional players with a Wiimote and Nunchuk. People always think that stuff like that is cool.
So, if you kick ass with your 3DS, you're super cool.
If you lose early in the bracket, well, you're among the many, and people will probably think nothing of it.
Come back again and again (maybe until you can get a Gamecube controller) and people will think you're cool.

If I saw someone entering with a 3DS I'd probably assume that they were just joking around. It's not really a serious controller.

I bought a brand new gc controller to play at a tourney a week ago. Semi broke it in once it started and won the first round with it. Come second round I lost the first match. My friend suggested I use my 3dsxl instead (as I've been using that much more than gc controller to play). I ended up winning that set and played the rest of the tourney with it comfortably.

I was one among a handful (lol) of other players (out of almost 50) using their 3ds to play. The general consensus is that the GC/Pro controller is "better" because they are bigger and have a C-stick. However it really comes down to what you're comfortable playing with. If you play your best with the 3ds then keep repping it proudly!

Are wireless controllers going to be allowed? I heard that they were banned at most tournaments due to wireless interference issues. Of course, that would apply to the 3DS as well.

Edit: I just browsed the Apex rulebook, and I don't see anything about wireless controllers being prohibited.

To you it may not be serious. But to others, the 3ds does have it's perks. I find it easier to complete an egg toss slide as a Yoshi by rolling my thumb from Y to B; and likewise JC Usmash by rolling thumb from X to A. The 3DS has been out long enough for people to find their controller preference. Judging a player by their controller is silly.

I wouldn't see why not. All you have to do is make sure to take out the battery once you complete your set. And that would not apply to 3ds because you can just disconnect it at anytime.

I think the more important question is why would you care what other people think?
Are you there to enjoy the experience of competing in a big Smash tournament or trying to impress peers with your choice of controller?
Obviously if you are concerned about advantages/limitations of controllers there's good reason to ask what people think of your choice of controller, but the post sounded more like being concerned about an image, especially that of being looked down on as a "noob".
Well, don't worry, people usually don't care about what controller is being used, but some may comment on the uniqueness of your choice. And noobs are usually treated well; we veterans generally like to help new people both get better at the game and have more fun while playing with us. It's really the scrubs that don't quite fit in X^)

Just enjoy yourself and if anyone gives you trouble enough to impact your experience please let a staff member know. If the staff member doesn't do anything about a legitimate problem, go straight to a head Tournament Organizer and let them know what is going on; I doubt any decent TO worth their salt is going to let someone bully you at their event let alone Apex.

I doubt it, they would probably look at you as some sort of Kingpin if you were able to perform well with the 3DS. If they did perceive as a noob based on your controller preference, I suppose that will give you the advantage as they underestimate your abilities. As everyone here mentioned, it is not something that you should concern yourself with.

But the pro controller has the same button layout.

EDIT: Oh wait, I was thinking of the Xbox controller layout where X/A and Y/B are adjacent and so are easy to hit together. I get what you're saying; the opposite buttons are closer to each other on 3DS than anything else.

If you do well, you've just proved that it doesn't matter what controller you use (something people should already know).
If you don't, you've got a john (something you shouldn't be using).

If someone looks at you funny, just tell them that it's not polite to stare. Easy peasy.

The thing I'd be worried about is having interference issues at such a large event. There's gonna be like 1500-2000 people there with cell phones and tablets and laptops and 3DSes and whatnot and that's a lot of wireless signals floating around. The 3DS wasn't built to handle something like that. You'd probably be safer with Wii U Pro or Classic Controller if you can get your hands on one of those and they're a pretty easy switch from 3DS since the button layouts are similar. Otherwise, find a friend who has a Wii U and adapter and try to get used to the Gamecube controller. You're in one of the biggest Smash regions in the country so it should be easy to find somebody.

No, you're right. The Xbox controller switches both the B-A and Y-X pairs from the standard Nintendo layout.

Use what you feel comfortable with.
A friend of mine entered a tournament using a Wii Remote and Nunchuck, got made fun of a bit for doing so, and made fourth place.

Your controller doesn't matter if you win.
If The Donkey Kong Bongo's has you winning in your scene who am I to tell you to stop.
It may be usable for DK's Final Smash, but we need to go further...

I went to Wii u tournament yesterday and I used my 3ds. I was using the GameCube controller until I was sent to losers bracket. I was playing horribly because I didn't have enough practice with it. When I switched to 3ds I was able to impress people with how well I did with it.

I mean I would but I'm in middle school so I can't really go find people and go to their house on a regular basis to practice since they will most likely be adults. I have one friend with a wii u and Sm4sh but he thinks the GC adapter isn't worth buying. And using a classic controller would be less convenient since that has to connect to the wiimote which is wireless.

I don't have smash wiiU but i do have 3ds, and since I am used to the layout of 3ds I use a Classic controller (not even pro) just because it feels the most like the 3ds layout, but with the added c stick and well, control sticks instead of circle pads. this could be a more viable option, but you will be mocked just as much :(

Yeah I'm gonna order a classic controller that has a GC port at the end so that I can plug and play.

Use whatever you like i don't think people are gonna really care about your controller preference when it is game time.

They honestly don't care...

Went to a local tourney of about 20 people the other day and used nothing but my 2ds controller. No one even took notice until I started winning more. Ended up second place and people were more impressed that I was using a 2ds. What matters is how you play, not what controller you use.

As long as you do well with it, and it doesn't sync to the console and mess with other people as they play, I see no problem with it.

At PNW last weekend, a guy brought a pro controller and it kept messing with whatever Wii U it was synced to whenever he put it in his bag.
