ok, in this topic, we intelligently discuss what kind of online options and features would be best.

first off, there is no doubt in my mind that brawl will be online. for discussion's sake, we will consider the lag time in brawl to be 6 frames on a good connection. because there is lag, i don't think we should go by a hosting system because the host will always have an advantage, we should just have servers. (in rank, in the nonranked matches, it's fine to host)

ok, let's start off with matchmaking. i think there should be a "just play" mode and a ranked mode.

in rank mode, these are the options of what online should be

choice a) people get to choose what skill level they think they are such as beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert. we will just have to go on the honor system and hope people know what level they belong in.

choice b) you go up in rank the more matches you win

choice c) your rank fluctuates based on the ranked people you beat and lose to. this is the hardest kind of ranking system to make.

of course, in the ranked options we have to lay out ground rules. we must have consistent results. when playing in ranked, you will be paired up randomly with someone within your rank. in the options menu, you may mark off maps that you don't want to play on (i'm thinking that there will be certain stages that cannot be turned off because of how neutral they are). of course items are turned off in rank. there will be no stage picking, the game will choose for you.

you will be able to go into single matches or sets of 3. 5 stock. in sets, you have 30 seconds to pick a new character while at the character select screen. if you do not choose in time, a random char. will be assigned to you.

in nonranked, there are more options.

one may host a nonranked and put with any items they want, on any stage, and even any number of matches they want. they can put in any rules they want.

there will be a search feature where you can look for matches with certain rules.

-----HEADSETS-------

there should be headsets
people want to smack talk and all that
it should be free for all talk, no friend codes. you will have the ability to mute someone.

ok, now let's hear some other people's ideas

Unranked mode can also have team battles, or maybe even have a team ladder.

Tournament mode where say 16 people all join and you get put into brackets just like in the game.

I don't think the system where you pick your skill level will work because you will get the losers who say they are beginners just to beat up on people who really are and then say pwned n00b. But it would be nice to be able to play within your own skill level.

Ok this is for the headsets

Nintendo is a family company. They are trying to incoroporoate gamers all of ages into games of all kinds, yes even smash. And nintendo would not want to ruin their rep by having headsets. You know there is going to be some teenage kid cus you out if he kills you once or he does a nice combo. And can you imagine what that would do to little old grandma. As for me personally, I may buy a headset. And if I did my little 11 year old sister would know. Then she would want to try it out then. And I don't want her to hear some of the language. But I think their is a way to stop this, friend codes. Only allow headsets when friend code battling. That's the way I see it.

As for ranking, I think B has the best chances. I that's one of the best ways I could see ranking in Brawl.

I don't thing going up the ladder just by number of wins is the best idea, I think a persons skill/record should count too, otherwise you are rewarding someones lack of life instead of actual skill. You KNOW someone is going to be playing 12 hours a day if it's just wins just so they can get to #1.

My ideal vision of Brawl's online would be this:

1. A ranking system based on your win/lose ratio.. you gain 1 point for a win, subtract one point for a loss.

2. Headsets to be incorporated. Online is always fun but it can get kind of stale, not actually being able to talk to your team mates or people your VSing.

3. The ability to create your own game rooms. This is one of the things that I don't want Nintendo to screw up. Instead of all games being a set time limit, with all items on, on a random stage; you get to choose the options of your game, set the stock, choose the stage or stages if there is a cycle, turn items on or off.

This is what I want.. hopefully some will happen, but only time will tell.

Wreked, if the headset system is like the DS, they'll only hear people on their friend code list. Does that solve your problem?

i think you should get more points for defeating a harder opponent which is why i'm against the 1/1 win lose point system

See but then there would have to be decimal points and what not.
Like you said in the Original Post, this would be the hardest way.

I'm up for Type B, as well as Friend Codes and headsets, and custom matches like IllidR said.

Rly hope there will be a online vs mode and a ranking.

I also had this idee where you would with maybe up to 23 ppl race to this side scrolling stage facing tons of foe's that dont die but just get in ur way, but they would have this handycap so that they fly a little further. And at the end there would be a couple of gaints you would have to get through. Through the level there would also be al these items that the players would be throwing at each other and there are special groups that will be hunting specific character through the whole level( Like a group of fox's would be hunting fox and a group of link's would be hunting link to balance thing out a big.) as the other enemies would just stop trying to hit you if ur not that close to them any more. I know this would still be a unfair to some characters sins some are way faster then others, so maybe there could be character specific servers.
In short it would just be a big chaotic rat race.

I like the idee of a voice chat, that just makes thing so much more fun.

i think that i would want to see a king of the hill mode where you have stay in a certain area gain points and you lose points if you are hit or ko ed untill you get to a certain number the person who gets to the number of points first wins

That could work too. Kind of like WoW's arena system.. You start out with a 1500 rating... and if you lose or win to a team around your skill level you lose or gain 15 points. Losing to someone of higher rank results in less points loss. Fairly good system.

I personally wouldn't want a ranking system, just because my internet stops working completely every 7-10 minutes (Comcast sucks). While I play Mario Strikers online with the Wii, whenever this happens, I get a loss and the people I'm facing think I just shut off the console or something (Although I really don't care what they think, now that I think about it). The end result is me with a terrible W/L ratio, even though I'm not that bad of a player, and while the internet does work, the connection is 4 out of 4 stars. But this is just one rare scenario.

Yup!

1. Also incorporate a very small percentage of it by actual hours played. Like if you play a lot but lose a lot it will be easier on you. If you play once a day but always win, it lowers you a little for lack of dedication.

2. Need headsets for real online, nuff said... Well not really. It would get so boring not being able to talk and mess around. Ever play with a bunch of friends and just stay silent? The fun is mostly gone.

3. Great! Set your own setting and let people choose how they want to play. Not randomize or keep the settings the same so its always the same gameplay.

OK, flame me but as you can see on my profile I am a competitive gamer and when you look for a good online system it is H2 and H3.

This has taught us that playing ranked matches have several positive outcomes:
1)the matches are more even and you aren't constantly owned; rank puts you where you should be
2)it helps give you a good idea of where you skills are at (good at 1v1 or 2v2 or free-for alls)
3)you can always choose unranked if you to roll the dice on either getting owned or owning

Flame now and all you want for my bringing in Halo but anyone who has been there can attest to how that is the matchmaking/online system to be envied.

Didn't Sakurai say at one point that even if there was online play, there would be no ranking system?

That being said, I do like the sound of IllidR's ideas.

I would love Headsets, I don't care as much for Rank though. I play Counterstrike: Source all the time and talking with people is awesome. Like someone said earlier, imagine yourself in a room with your friends playing Smash...and not talking. Its kinda lame. Also you should have the option hear people with/with out friend codes. Adding 3 other people just to talk for a round and then deleting them? lol

He did say that. There will only be a record of your wins and losses, but that's it. There may be a Wii headset coming out, but you can only hear people that are on your Wii friend code list, as I've said before. Other than that, this doesn't mean that some cool online features can't take play.

Headsets ftw, at least some form of communication.... Wii remote mic anyone? ;)

But anyways, the perfect Brawl online for is for it to have
a)Customizable rooms (As in choose stages, items, etc....)
b)The possibility to play people who aren't on your firend list (It's too much work to add someone you will only be playing once)
c)The ability to create tournaments
d)Playing with multiple accounts (As in me and my brother play on the same Wii but he has his profile and I have mine)- I don't know how this works with Wiis, but on the DS it sucked X_X. It can really affect your Win/Lose ratio

C'mon Sakurai, I know you can do this, it's all that's really needed

I think choice c would be the most logical and actually possible. I believe ranking systems like that are just based off of a formula from a programming standpoint I don't believe it would be that difficult to make. I believe Warcraft 3 incorporates that...even Wii Sports (From what I tell) does that. (Just look at the Tennis matches). The Wii would most likely come out with a headset...I just hope its wireless. I also know that Nintendo snuck in some keyboard support for the searching option like you mentioned could be done even easier...Im sure Nintendo will stick with game-only friend codes which is really frustrating...Im hoping if they include ranking they have state/regional ranking!

What if the game could auto adjust its speed depending on the persons connection? For example Super Slow Brawl for people still stuck on 56k (If there is anyone out there...)

I'd like to see online tournaments. DCs count as losses.

The use of headsets is a bad idea, especially for a family company.

Rankings might work, but would have to be reset after a certain time. It should be around a few weeks to 3 months.

I'd also like to say that downloadable content would be so awesome. New levels? New items? possibly a character?

I would be content with something like Strikers Charged setup, but I'm certainly hoping for more.
