This past weekend, our Texas based correspondent, Josh "1PC" Olalde, attended Smash the Record 2016 to get a deeper insight of what people thought about the charitable event that was held in Kissammee, Florida. Since the event was being held at a 24 hr venue, there were plenty of people around.
For people who are not aware, Smash the Record is a donation Smash tournament/speed run event that takes place in Orlando, Florida that attempts to break the Guinness World Record for Longest Video Game Marathon Playing a Fighting Game. All of the donations to Smash the Record go towards the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. In total, Smash the Record donated $13,902 in its first year and $50,637 the following year. No prize money is given to the winners and the competition/environment is much more on the casual side compared to an average tournament. Thanks to the efforts of Jackson Parodi, Raging Cherry, WFX Shroomed, VGBootCamp, The Crimson Blur, and everyone who helped to the event, over $51,000 was raised for St Jude Children's Hospital.
1PC went out into the crowd to ask the people what their thoughts and impressions were about Smash the Record event. Questions entailed of how they were enjoying it, what were they looking forward to and most of all why they would come back next year!
At the event, there was also late-night players taking advantage of the 24hr venue playing friendlies until 3 am in the morning. This goes to show that night owls also enjoy this event due to its extensive amount of set-ups and the events several attendees.
