What Pokemon should I watch out for?

After being a goody goody "well-balanced team" person, I've finally decided to turn to competitive gameplay. So could you guys give me a good start by telling me some popular Pokemon I should watch out for, and maybe some good counters for them? Don't worry. I know about Skarmory and Blissey, and I also know Salamence, Tyranitar, and Garchomp are offensive Pokemon. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Oh yeah, could you guys also tell me some defensive Pokemon that can withstand most or at least a chunk of popular Pokemon? Also, I know what physical/special sweepers are.
