What makes a good competitive game? (and how can Smash 4 be one)

Sakurai recently said he didn't consider the Smash Bros series a Fighting game but for the sake of simplicity I'll use other fighting games as points of reference.

The way I see it a good competitive game; be it a fighting game, a Real Time Strategy or even Mario Kart; needs to have or be these things.

Easy to pick up, difficult but rewarding to master
Basically, it needs to bring in newcomers and keep them interested until they reach the big leagues

Be as fun to watch as it is to play
If a game isn't fun to watch then streams and tournaments will falter, not to mention it hurts it's party game status.

Be unpredictable without being totally random
Come-backs always drive the crowd wild but no one wants to attribute their victory or loss to something out of their control.

Have a balanced cast
Characters can have uneven match-ups but it shouldn't get to the point where one character dominates them all METAKNIGHTCOUGH and another is a bad joke. *cough* Pichu *cough*

Not have a fan base that has an us/them mentality between casual and competitive players.
Can't build a strong fandom house out of splintered wood

Where did the previous games succeed/falter on these points and how can Smash 4 succeed?
