What is the point of Amiibo's?

Other than actually having the physical statue of the character, what is the point of these things?

Is the idea like real-life Pokémon, where kids take these things to each other's houses and watch them battle it out?

You can scan them into the game where they become special CPUs who start at Lv 1 and go up to Lv 50 and as you play against them, they begin to learn how to fight and adapt their fighting style to your own. Nice challenge, if I do say so myself. I've heard several good things about them.

On disc locked content--In smash bros they are for... hmmm... Why do we play video games? Entertainment.

They unlock exclusive content in Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors, as well. So it's like overpaying for DLC and getting a neat little figure as a bonus.
