What is Meta Game?

So i am by no means a newb when it comes to SSBB, but i keep hearing about "meta game" and i have no clue what it is.

i have been waiting a long time before asking this because i tought maybe i would figure it out. As you can see, i haven't.

the metagame is the type of play around your area, or the popular/ most effective type of play.

Meta-anything is the discipline of the discipline. Sounds weird, but makes sense with examples. Metaphysics is the physics of physics, and meta game is the game of the game. In Brawl, meta-game can apply to something like a new technique changing how everybody plays. The game is still the same, but the meta-game changes.
