What if Nintendo didn't exist, and they didn't create Smash Bros? What company would have?

What company DO YOU WANT to create the Smash Bros franchise if Nintendo didn't exist?

Sony has the most diverse line-up out of those companies, I feel. "Smash bros" as it exists today wouldn't exist obviously but if there was a company that created a similar kind of fighting/party game, I feel it'd be Sony.

If Nintendo didn't exist, the gaming industry would've stayed dead along with atari. There would be no smash bros.

There would be no Super Smash Bros. because it is all about Nintendo characters fighting each other. No Nintendo = no Smash.

However, that doesn't eliminate the possibility of another Mascot Fighter being similar to it. But it wouldn't be Super Smash Bros.

Ehh, Sega, Namco, or some other Japanese company would have popularized home consoles if Nintendo wasn't around. If not them, then there was still PC to advance and grow the gaming industry (even if home consoles died with Atari).

It would have been that super dragon fighter or whatever Sakurai originally conceived. So hal would have made a 'smash bros' essentially as it is but with original characters. Nintendo didn't 'make' SSB, they published it and licensed their characters for use in it. But no Nintendo means they would likely have released cross platform, or perhaps in a parellel universe Sega would have filled the void were there no Nintendo, and it would have been a Sega 2nd party game.

Edit: perhaps a more tangible question would be, 'had Nintendo rejected the idea, which publisher, if any, might have taken Sakurai up? And if so, would they have proposed the 'all star roster' concept in favor of an original cast?'

Didn't Konami have a Smash Bros-esque fighter with Bomberman and Optimus Prime? And aren't the Capcom vs. Everything games basically their Mascot Fighter anyways.
I suppose Sega has a decent variety of franchise to make their own Smash
. None that I care about though...
I guess Sony could have had one. Hard to say if it would've ended up worse than Playstation All Stars since they could've used the Smash Bros mechanics without being called out for copying.

WHOA, Sony didn't copy Smash Bros. It's may look similar, but trust me, it's different.

I think the poster was saying that Sony precisely didn't copy all of SSB's mechanics because they would have been called out for copying, and that in a Nintendo-less world they could have used what we understand to be 'smash mechanics' and have been original.

I know. I'm saying that if Smash Bros didn't exist, Sony could have gotten away with "copying" it and made PSASBR play more like a true Smash Bros.
.... Yes, it makes sense. Just takes a moment to think about it.

Namco because I respect and love Soul Calibur. Also, Samus' "morph balls" would bounce.

It would be easy to go with Capcom, the reigning king of crossover fighters, but they seem to like crossing over with other companies, so maybe a Capcom-only fighter wouldn't be so obvious.

Instead, I went with Square, who also shows a love for both crossovers and fighting games (Ehrgeiz and Dissidia are two prominent examples). And while most people associate Square with Final Fantasy, their history is varied enough to be more than just spiky hair and spiky swords fighting; Bouncer, Parasite Eve, Front Mission and that's without even touching on Enix's games.

None would.
With no Nintendo there'd be no Mario, no Zelda, no Samus etc etc. And no Nintendo to invent the SSB style of games.

But if someone else hypothetically would have some up with the same idea that Nintendo didn't (Because Nintendo didn't exist), I think Sega or Capcom. Because only they have enough iconic characters to make it work.

Any you're missing?
Yes. Blizzard Entertainment.
Imagine all of the Heroes of the Storm characters in a Smash Bros like game instead. That'd be pretty fun I think. I think Blizzard now have such an iconic roster of characters they could pull it off so well.

I voted other because I think Blizzard would do a great job at this with their cast of characters.

Without Nintendo, there would be no PlayStation, so Sony wouldn't even me mentioned, infact, the industry would of ended with the Atari.

If Nintendo never existed....

Sony would've never started making their PlayStation consoles.

SEGA would've never been nearly as popular and famous as they are, as they would've never created Sonic.

Mega Man would not nearly be as famous or known, as his most popular games are on Nintendo consoles.

And most importantly, no one would've created R.O.B. and the NES, so the video game industry would remain dead until another company makes one (most likely Microsoft, as they like to make new things and take risks, just like Nintendo).

However, we wouldn't have gotten those horrible CD-i games but would it be worth it?

Also, for those who misunderstood, the pool asks you which company, in your opinion, would've created a series LIKE Smash Bros, if Nintendo didn't exist, not the actual games we have now.

seeing as how Nintendo saved the gaming crash of the 80s I'd think if Nintendo didn't exist there would be no gaming industry

But to indulge the question I suppose Sony is really the only other company with enough characters to use for a game like Smash (I still think ASBR could have been a great game) .
