I don't know where I'm going with this. Who would be better or worse? Where would they be in the tier list? What new combos would be possible and which ones would go away?

Well, then Fox would be Falco with a good recovery and Falco would be Fox but worse.

Fox would be broken lol

Falco's dair is literally the best of its kind; especially in NTSC. It's a sex kick with spiking properties. It can shield pressure, it can start combos, continue combos, set up for kill moves at high percent, gimp, etc.

So by replacing it with Fox's drill, you would be taking away Falco's BnB shine dair pressure, combos, and edge guards. The only benefit to having drill is that dair>shine works at all percent.

Meanwhile, Fox would be disgusting since he would get all of the things Falco previously had from dair and lose absolutely nothing.

The problem with this comparison is that you chose a black and white scenario. If one move is clearly better than the other, the answer is obvious as to who benefits and who doesn't. Something like this doesn't make for an interesting discussion, imo.

So with that said, I think Fox/Falco's shines are the only moves you could debate about during a theoretical swap because it isn't clear which one is better

Which 20XX 4.0 lets us dabble into, and it's hilarious lol (Achilles has them coded to the SDR character toggle). Fox with Falco shine is weird. Lose shine spikes for early gimps, gain Shine-Uair. Lose Thunders combo and Fox waveshines, but Falco waveshines on fast fallers are way better with Fox's quicker walk.

The spacie shines really complement their movesets, so swapping janks up all their options. As far as I can tell, It's enough to ruin Falco lol.

lol thats actually hilarious that 20XX lets you do that. I'll have to mess around with that.

From a theoretical standpoint, I would agree that they are both weakened but its hard to say if either character gets ruined. We are ultimately limited by the perspective of 10+ years of shine meta with Fox and Falco.

Like there are so many weird pros and cons. Fox's shine pressure would be hella safe with the extra damage, but it is easy to forget that he also has the smaller hitbox. His entire game basically becomes getting uairs. Upsmash is a lot harder to connect without his shine.

Falco's combo game is weak without his shine, but he'd honestly be a gimping monster. He could force you by the edge with shine and get a guaranteed dair>dsmash or dair>dair at higher percent for a KO.

Super strange nonetheless
