This is a question that I think of a lot and honestly had to have been asked previously, though I can't find a thread.
I REALLY want to know what got some of you here.

For me Smash has been there since the beginning. I've been playing since I was like 4 or 5 and it was a major part of my childhood (cliché), from N64 to Sm4sh (excluding Brawl I kinda skipped the Wii) it's been there for me and it represents a love for gaming as a whole.
COMPETITIVE Smash is a different story, I've only recently learned of it and have only really been trying to play competitively for the past couple of years.
What got me into competitive was the likes of the Melee Gods (including Leffen and Axe and honestly a lot more people that would greatly lengthen this already lengthy post) and learning about the insane meta Melee has become, finding out about Project M and cursing the fact that I didn't have the materials to get it, a previous desire to become a tournament player engraved in me by Evo's past, and finally the popularity of Sm4sh which went so far as to permeate my area.

Melee was always the apple of my eye but it honestly seemed inaccessible for a very long time, though now it seems much more attainable realistically Smash 4 has taken me and I doubt it'll let go any time soon.
Come 2015 and I'm still trying to make my own entrance into tournaments, honing my craft with friends and vowing to become a name in the community. And eventually I will. I will. My craving for competition is insatiable and my desire to win is ravenous. Though the people here are a bigger reason honestly. Seeing a lot of you in action is inspiring and the sense of comradery is strong here. I absolutely adore this community.

What about you all?
I know this site's been up since 2002 some of you were here while I was learning to ride a bike you've gotta have something to share.
Long live Smash. Long live Smash Boards.

Smash Bros hooked me up because I saw a fighting game that is way different than what I had used to know, and most of all, I saw my favorite characters that I thought it was impossible for them to come together. And after getting this game, I also had managed to know other Nintendo franchises.

I got into competitive smash when smash for 3ds came out because my friend Oscar had told me that Nintendo was hosting tourneys in 100 select gamestop and everyone who made 1st place would fly over to New York for National tournament. I was so hyped!!! Until I found out that it was a 4 player smash tournament with items on. Yeah it was kinda bull but I met some really cool people from the community and they told me about smash boards and I signed up asap. Prior I had always tried keeping up with melee and smash 4 tournaments but I didn't get motivated to actually go to tourneys myself until I saw the famous Documentary: "The Smash Bros" and from there I was convinced that I want to play smash competitively. I will admit I'm having trouble practicing melee since not a lot of people play melee competitively except my friend Oscar but he's almost always busy.

For the longest time, my friends and I were just casual Project M and Melee players. Then back in September of 2014, Hungrybox inspired my friends and I to go to our first tournament. We got wrecked beyond belief. Since that tournament, we've been in our local scene trying to climb up as far as we can.

I've been active in the community since I got Smash 3DS and Wii U. Since then, I've been playing more competitively, for over eight months now.
I think the reason I wanted to join was because I wanted to feel like I was accomplishing something in my life. I don't think I've even done something notable the sixteen years I've been alive. Also because I thought I would at least make a friend, though I don't believe I've made one yet.

I got into it because my friend and I played brawl almost nonstop for 4 years and for the last year, we just started to look up different tech for our characters and we started to get good. After that, I was hooked.

I got hooked by Brawl and played it nearly nonstop for I think a few years, and then was thrilled to see that Smash had another level and got into competitive Sm4sh. I play competitively because, and only because, it's fun. I also liked watching the pros. I was astounded to see how much more smash had to offer.

I've been playing Smash since Melee, although not competitively. Then I went on to Brawl and loved it even more, but then Blazblue came out and I got hooked. And I eventually got into other fighting games and completely forgotten about Smash. EVO 2013 comes around and tbh I wanted Skullgirls to win, but the fact that Smash was not only a contender but also winning piqued my interest. Looked into it and found out that game I played when I was younger actually had huge tournaments, but I didn't want to play Melee again, so I played Project M, because I like Brawl and mods. So thanks to EVO, I got back into Smash.

I play Smash 4 now, and I stick with it because I enjoy the game.

Before I started playing Smash I was a competitive pokemon player. I used to watch a bunch of different people that played, one of those people was shofu. If you didn't know shofu started uploading Smash Bros. content which is what introduced me to the series, I watched a lot of his smash bros content (because I enjoy his personality) but it didn't persuade me to buy the game. Recently I stumbled upon the Smash WIi U stream for EVO, I watched the tournament and decided to finally buy the game.

I guess it's strange for a Nintendo fan to not really know about the Smash Bros. series looking back however I've never really been a "hardcore gamer" it's always just been something I enjoyed when I had some free time. Pokemon was the first time I ever got serious about a game and probably the main reason I stopped playing other games for so long.

After dealing with a severe depression in November 2012, I wanted to play a video game in order to distance myself from said issue. I played Brawl way too much at the time, so I opted for Melee instead. As I went through the game, I began to fully realize I wasn't playing well, and thus, I began to watch tutorials on how to get better at the game and practice advanced techniques, besdies watching tournament matches for inspiration and all that. I was very impressed by the way how smashers played at tourneys. It can be [very] fun for the most part.

I'm currently playing 3DS/Wii U. Had my Wii's disc drive not been damaged in any way (don't own a GameCube, mind you), I would still be playing Melee to this very day. Probably sticking to the latest two games. It's still Smash, after all.

It's fun; I enjoy playing competitively, and I've met some cool and friendly people at some of these places, even if most of them stomp me into the ground.

Smash 64 was one of those games I got as a gift for the N64 that I would play constantly, Melee I have vague memories coming home from intermediate school, especially if it had been a day I had been in trouble, it felt good to get away into another world, other known as Adventure Mode. Up until year (no joke), I didn't know there were two types of players: competitive and casual. I'm sure I'll get around to play competitively and not procrastinate on it.
