I've been talking at work about Nintendo E3 and someone said something that striked me today, the Wii U gamepad is probably the first time a console could make a serious RTS game and have it control well, and Nintendo should really tap into that. Another person countered that it would make it too one player, and that they could utilize it even better by mixing the RTS and MOBA genre with 4 heroes playing on Pro Controllers and the game pad player building a base and sending waves of troops around the map. (obviously fully online play would also be possible, but 5 players working together to
After this discussion I went away and thought about new franchises or ways they could do, but it really just occurred to me that they didn't need to; they have so many franchises that they could make into a strategy based game, and it got me thinking that this'd be something worth discussing with all you guys.
For the the games that stand out are Metroid and Kid Icarus.
Metroid could obviously take queues from Starcraft, and maybe Warcraft 3's heroes, allowing you to command the forces of the Galactic Federation, Space Pirates and maybe even Metroids, X parasites or a Phazon faction? Heroes could be bosses, hunters etc... with Ridley, Metroid Queen and Samus being pretty significant names for the team. It particularly fits Metroid to have a hero running around the map fighting creatures to collect power-ups hidden about the place, and many of the characters have enough skills to be great hero characters; any thoughts?
As for KI it's far stronger on the MOBA front than RTS, with obvious heroes like Pit, Palutena, Magnus, Phosphora etc for the forces of Light and Nature (assumedly working together because the forces of Light really don't have many heros to hand) and Hades, Medusa, Thanatos etc for the Underworld Forces. The various enemies of the KIverse also suit the lanes structure pretty well; that said it's far less fitting as an RTS, but with more characters it'd likely be easier to populate a hero roster.
Does anyone else have any ideas for franchises that could make a good RTS of MOBA for Nintendo? And for that matter do you think they will, or should, make a game of this style?
