What franchise could be an RTS or MOBA?

I've been talking at work about Nintendo E3 and someone said something that striked me today, the Wii U gamepad is probably the first time a console could make a serious RTS game and have it control well, and Nintendo should really tap into that. Another person countered that it would make it too one player, and that they could utilize it even better by mixing the RTS and MOBA genre with 4 heroes playing on Pro Controllers and the game pad player building a base and sending waves of troops around the map. (obviously fully online play would also be possible, but 5 players working together to

After this discussion I went away and thought about new franchises or ways they could do, but it really just occurred to me that they didn't need to; they have so many franchises that they could make into a strategy based game, and it got me thinking that this'd be something worth discussing with all you guys.

For the the games that stand out are Metroid and Kid Icarus.

Metroid could obviously take queues from Starcraft, and maybe Warcraft 3's heroes, allowing you to command the forces of the Galactic Federation, Space Pirates and maybe even Metroids, X parasites or a Phazon faction? Heroes could be bosses, hunters etc... with Ridley, Metroid Queen and Samus being pretty significant names for the team. It particularly fits Metroid to have a hero running around the map fighting creatures to collect power-ups hidden about the place, and many of the characters have enough skills to be great hero characters; any thoughts?

As for KI it's far stronger on the MOBA front than RTS, with obvious heroes like Pit, Palutena, Magnus, Phosphora etc for the forces of Light and Nature (assumedly working together because the forces of Light really don't have many heros to hand) and Hades, Medusa, Thanatos etc for the Underworld Forces. The various enemies of the KIverse also suit the lanes structure pretty well; that said it's far less fitting as an RTS, but with more characters it'd likely be easier to populate a hero roster.

Does anyone else have any ideas for franchises that could make a good RTS of MOBA for Nintendo? And for that matter do you think they will, or should, make a game of this style?

Hyrule Warriors could spin-off into Hyrule Wars. It's already in an alternate dimension that reaches into the existing timeline to pull heroes and monsters together in a crazy mashup of the Zelda universe. The same could be done with various characters throughout the series. Imagine Temples of Time being used to summon characters from their original worlds; they'd serve as the gateways for important units, while other constructs could develop the plurality of armies.

Hmm... it's possible, I discounted the series because of it's crossover already, but yeah it could happen...

I'm not sure what they'd do for the Hyrulian army though... Guards and soldiers fill out the basic ranks, with Sheika as cool stealth classes... but we've never really seen any special units or siege equipment; I guess they could make them up mind you....

The Armies of Ganon would be amazing though, there are so many creatures that could be used to make great units!

Personally I'm not a fan of the idea, just because Hyrule Warriors exists, and I'd prefer to see a different franchise get the treatment, but it does make sense I guess.

A long, long while ago my friends and I threw together a few ideas for a Zelda RTS. It would have been a spin-off that took place in an alternate time line where Hyrule fell into a civil war. The player could play as either Hyrule, The Gorons or the Zoras. Aside from that, I really don't remember any specific details.

Hmmm... I guess that could work, you'd never have a 'bad guy', but it'd be really tough to balance the water and land lay-outs.

That said you mentioning Zoras and Gorons was important, as in a two army setting they could fight alongside Hyrule to fill out the army roster in some really exciting ways! It's be cool if you could also hire Deku scrubs as scouts, hiding in grass and shooting rocks, but that's probably just me being a Majora's Mask fanboy!

I think you've convinced me that a Zelda RTs would be fun, though I would still personally prefer Metroid...

Actually, that could make for a really neat unit. Set them in front of your base, give them the "hide" command to burrow underground and then they start shooting at enemy units as they approach. Of course, being a unit instead of a structure means they could also be used as ranged attackers in an assault and could be easily moved from base to base.

Or run them out early in the match (assuming they're cheap enough) and you can use them as forward scouts. Hide them a way ahead of your base and don't shoot with them so you can be pre-react to approaching attacks.

I imagine a Nintendo MOBA would pull from their entire catalog ala Smash Bros.

Pokémon would work pretty well, though it would severely lack summoners or pet heroes... other than Vespiquen I can't think of any other Pokémon who could justifiably summon others to fight alongside them, and even then Combee only really work as a wall..

However a Smash like version would be great, it's just a shame the Pokémon trainer is gone, I could imagine him summoning Charmander/Squirtle/Bulbasaur to fight alongside and evolving them as he leveled up the skill... The only problem then is what would the lane MOBs be?
