What does it indicate when you flash ??

(if so, would somebody just post the link, thz)

Take this demo play as an example

The picture beside your damage meter flashes when battling.
It doesn't seem related when you give attacks (for yoshi's not flashing when he attacks in invincibe mode), nor does it seem to relate to damage taken...

Anyone figure out the relation ? Or is it just random flashing ??

The portraits go transparent when a character goes behind them so they don't get in the way of seeing everyone.

Just seen it and, not so much as a flash.. more like a fade away.
