This is for any competively-played Smash game, of course, but what do you think classifies as illegal or legal for tournament play (in terms of items, techniques and stages)? For me, this is what I think;
Stuff like wavedashing, L-cancelling and dashdancing are all considered legal because they up the skill levels without being broken mechanics; you can't just L-cancel off the bat because it requires skill to do. Those mechanics are thusly tournament legal, so use of them doesn't disqualify you. Same thing with superarmor, Kirbyciding/Ganonciding and such; they're mechanics that up skill or are extremely risky for a good reward; thus, they'd be legal for balance (and, well, you can't help superarmor if it's preprogramed in. )
Utilizing a glitch that leaves your opponent helpless (such as the Infinite Disable) and waiting for the timer to wind down would be banned, since it gives one player an undesirable advantage and doesn't prove who's the better player, just who can glitch their way to victory the fastest. Items are banned because they don't have a set pattern; a Bob-omb doesn't always appear 5 minutes in and crates don't always spawn half a minute in, so they are random and thus detrimental to showing actually skilled play.
Stages with unavoidable or obstructive hazards, or stages that are nothing but such hazards, such as Brinstar, Brinstar Depths, Mushroomy Kingdom and Poke Floats would also be banned since they have too many hazardous and dramatically unfair factors to be considered viable (the acid in Brinstar, Kraid in Brinstar Depths, constantly moving platforms in Poke Floats, scrolling in Mushroomy Kingdom).
Characters with obstructive or game-breaking techniques (like Mewtwo's Infinite Disable) are banned from doing those techs. Characters who are hard to beat with anybody on the roster but a Mirror Match (like Meta Knight in Brawl) are also banned to level the playing field.
But this is my opinion; what do you guys think?
