What could the subspace emissary mean for some hopefuls?

Today's major update involved, as we all know, Brawl's new single-player mode, call 'the Subspace Emissary'. In the update, he said that each character's stories will be fleshed out, but here's what I'm wondering.

Does this mean even more characters will be reduced to simply appearing as a cameo in certain character's storylines? Discuss.
