What controller should I buy?

A few months ago I got pissed after losing to my brother and threw my old purple controller, and now it doesn't work right. Now I walk a lot when I want to dash, and it makes the game unplayable. I'm looking for a replacement, and I've only been practicing competitive for about 2 months so I don't know a lot about controllers. I've used the sm4sh controller and it feels pretty good, but are any of the older controllers better for melee?

Nah I think they're all fine. Personally, I'm used to the white ones from before the Sm4sh ones came out so I can't use anything else. Things like pivots, shield drops and the overall feel just don't feel right to me now that I'm so accustomed to the white ones. I'd recommend the sm4sh controllers as they're like $23 on Amazon last time I checked.

I bought a sm4sh controller when I got my wii u adapter so I have one of those so I might get the white brawl controller so I can decide which one I like better.

The "new" white ones (before wiiU) vary less from controller to controller in my experience and almost all of them work well for shield drops.

I actually bought a white sm4sh controller because I like my brothers black one's shield drops it looks cool and it's cheap

Sm4sh controller works for me! Whatever you do, stay far away from the $10 third party controllers! I bought one a few years ago to play Mario Sunshine and it's absolutely terrible!

The sm4sh controller just doesn't cut it if you're using a tech heavy character you will feel the flaws. The joystick isnt as accurate for inputs and the trigger buttons stick sometimes, which can throw off your wave dashes.

It could just be a case of my sm4sh controller being the issue but when I try to input RSHL with falco often times falco will just SHL, whereas this isn't the case with my old controller.

That's generally a problem associated with newer controllers that haven't been broken in yet

Dash sensitivity is one of the most important factors in a control imo. But it varies from controller to controller quite noticeably, especially among the non-white ones.
