I've got my 10 dollars to use on the Virtual Console on Wii!

Ehem, in Smash Bros, what character suits my criteria best. This is different from my Melee one because of the lesser amount of characters.

-Has a few good finishing moves
-Has good recovery
-Has a good damage racking move.

The character needs to have at least 1 of these attributes, and I don't care what tier it is in.

Every character has combos that can rack up a lot of damage, with Samus as a general exception. No one in this game has a lot of trouble killing either, so anyone you pick up will have a good finishing move. By good recovery, what in particular are you looking for: distance or recovery options (or both)?

I find it hard to recommend a character because mostly everyone in this game has the stuff you are looking for. Why not try out all of the characters and decide for yourself?

IMHO play Fox and Falcon till you understand the game, then switch to Pikachu/Kirby.

I wouldn't say that playing only a couple of specific characters helps you understand the game; I'd actually argue that it's the opposite. The more characters you play, the more you will understand the game. Learning all the MUs is essential and pretty easy considering how few characters are in the game, so check out all the characters' moves and such first.

Also, be sure to play online via emulator. You expose yourself to numerous other players and playstyles and can play at your own convenience.

why would you start with fox? that should be like the last character (or Yoshi) somebody should try to master.

you pretty much need your tech skill to be at a certain level to be good with fox, definitely not a beginning character.

Luigi sucks
Just try them out and you'll find something that you like. You won't find a definite answer here because everyone is different, but as an example, I started with fox. IMO that was a good idea because now my techskill is not bad, and I can go to any other character (except falcon because I mess up his timing a lot for some reason) and I can at least count on being able to Z cancel everything and being able to move around with no problem.

Prisonchild thinks that fox shouldn't be a starter character, but all of these are opinions. Play the game, mess around with some characters, and then you will naturally start playing the ones you feel more comfortable with more often

See which one you like, experiment. Find videos of top players of each of them and pick the character that has a style that you like.

I enjoy using yoshi for example due to his unorthodox double jump and because his terrible grab forced me to approach differently

threads like these are silly

it's best to try out the characters and decide for yourself

plus the attributes you listed are pretty vague things that a lot of characters have
