...you can dash dance in this game. What leads you to believe otherwise?

Anyway, like hype machine said, it's mostly used to mixup up your approach and find openings. It's also pretty nifty for your edge game.

Just for making your opponent not know what you're gonna do next whether its an standard, special, grab, shield, jump, etc. Not too effective in Smash 4

The reason dash dancing isn't as useful in Smash 4 as in Melee is that in Melee, the window for reversing your direction instantaneously was the entire initial dash animation, instead of just a short window at the start of it.

Dash dancing is sort of useful for feinting a dash and seeing how your opponent responds. It's also good for instantly changing direction out of a foxtrot.

Real potentially practical use for Dashdance:

After Foxtrotting as a means to pivot DA without committing to running.

As the other people have mentioned its main use is in mindgames. Ive found a few more subtle uses. The smoke that you kick up can periodically conceal you at close quarters. Dashdancing at point-blank is really funny because the opponent's vision becomes very poor. Also. Dashdancing can be better than remaining idle because some characters have a smaller model when dancing (Greninja comes to mind)

If you are reffering to the quick, in place dancing that was seen in Brawl then unfortunately it doesn't have to many aplications. Some players will use it after taking a stock as a sort of taunt. Dance Trotting however, is much more simliar to melee dash dancing albeit requiring a bit more practice and work to properly apply during a match. Works wonders for mindgames though, particularily for characters like Falcon, Little Mac, and Marth.

Ken used it to bait out attacks and then dash back in for a grab.

In Melee, Project M, and Smash Flash 2, this is possible....in Brawl and Smash 4....ah...not so much.

You can dash back and forth without skidding

But since it has to be done at a specific moment, and can't be done before that, it's not as useful.

While it isn't as useful, I'd still learn how to use dash and pivots appropriately since they are actually very useful in this game for mix-ups and mindgames.

Yes you can't turn on a dime like you can in Melee, but at least here it's still very useful even if it has more commitment than in Melee or PM, which would be none at all.

I've used dash dancing as an means of evasion/baiting against smashes and punishing my opponent. I've found it useful against attacks that have multiple hitboxes that I don't want to get caught blocking or spot dodging. Baited a Meta Knight to smash with it when I was ready to finish the stock, and it was glorious.

By itself it's not spectacular, but it adds more options to the number of mind games you can play to win.
