What buttons to push for techniques?

I never grasped the techniques of SSB Melee when I was younger and found out about them. Not owning the game myself was also a big hindrance in mastering them. I liked the game nonetheless and tried mastering wavedashing, as a first priority, whenever I had the chance. But the move was really hard to perform, even under controlled environments, ("wait a sec, I just wanna try something. Stop hitting me ffs!").
Now, many years later, I finally got my finger out of my butthole and downloaded a Gamecube emulator with Melee and my ps3 controller. A gamecube controller-to-pc adapter is on the way from china, until then this one is not half-bad. Now, while figuring out how to wavedash once again, I saw my biggest problem with the whole shabang. I was jumping by pulling the analogue stick up... I'm surprised I even got it to work at all :p

I got to wondering what buttons are the best options to use when performing the various techniques of Melee when there is so many options for jumpiing and shielding. For wavedashing, jumping with the analogue stick is clearly not the way to go, but would there be any difference between the other two jump buttons? And for performing the dodge, would it be better to use the L-trigger to mentally have the dash withing the movement half of the controller, or the R-trigger to keep the balance and not lose the controller while button-mashing? Not that I have ever lost the controller while playing
...yet.

So is there a universal way of button mashing, or is it generally a personal preference? Are there more ******** ways of controlling a character, like jumping with the analogue stick right before you pull it downwards in a combination which should be almost simultaneously?

It's personal preference. Just hold the controller the way you feel the most comfortable. Some players also jump with the stick rather than x/y buttons but it's not as popular.
