I'm right-handed, so historically, I've been using the R button to block since Super Smash Bros. on N64. The reason I'm asking is because of this.

He demonstrates a method at 0:51 where you map Jump to the R button in order to perform the technique easier. Granted, I use Mega Man as one of my main characters, and I'm interested in this technique. However, that would cause me to erase 15 years of habit to switch buttons, and I don't even know if it's practical.

What button do you use to Shield and have you ever had to switch buttons for the sake of new technique?

You could always use the claw grip to jump instead.
I usually use index finger on Y, and thumb on the c-stick. You can put your thumb on B as well. Always having a finger on jump, and thumb on the c-stick opens up a lot of options for a lot of my characters.
I don't know, my method of holding the controller is pretty unconventional. I switch to normal grip whenever I use the Z or A button. Granted, I DO shield using the L button-- a habit developed from using Wiimote and nunchuk when I first played Brawl.
I switched to the Gamecube controller for the C-stick, which I heard that you could open up your options with, and perform certain Brawl ATs-- specifically, "dual-stick" SDI, and momentum cancelling.
The new controls in general took me somewhere from a week to a month to get used to. I don't know how often you play, so I don't know how long it'll take you to get used to new controls.

If you want easier OoS options with tap jump off but want to keep R set to shield then set L to jump. I personally have R/A set to shield and L/Y set to jump, I use Y the most while L is solely for easier OoS stuff.

Just keep whichever shoulder button you usually use as shield, and switch the other one to jump. If you're used to the R button for shielding, just switch the L button to jump and you can do all the jump-based techs you want.

I've been using the R button to shield since Smash 64, and as a Link main I use this technique a lot when playing him, it's not hard for me to do.

I've used Melee controls ever since Melee, except I've removed Tap Jump since that was possible. Thus, I use R to shield, and don't swap controls for the sake of techniques.

But... but the R button was grab in Smash 64... meaning every time you wanted to shield, you would grab first instead. :c
Z (left trigger finger) was the only true shield button in that game, which is why I've used L (left trigger finger) in every game since. That's why I had to mess with the controls on Smash 3DS... R (right trigger finger) became shield after 15 years of being grab, and L (left trigger finger) became grab after 15 years of being shield. I couldn't deal with that!

The only other time I played with non-default controls was when I played Fox in Brawl, setting Y to special instead of jump made it much easier to shorthop triple laser.

I set L to shield with R to jump so as to easier do an egg toss slide as Yoshi (with tap jump off too) since Brawl. If you are worried about messing up muscle memory, then use L instead to jump. It will take practice, but you'll eventually get the hang of it.

I have R to sheild and L to jump. That way I have movement on one hand and attacks on the other.

I have been using my left index finger (L) for shield ever since z-trigger was default shield in smash64.

I use my left index finger, a habit from Melee. For me, left index finger -> shield, right index finger -> grab.

Now I'm thinking of switching, but those 10 years of muscle memory are making it incredibly difficult.

I've got L&R set for shield (even though I only use R) on the Pro Controller. ZL&ZR are set to grab but I never use them. I just use L+A for grabbing.

I shield with L in all games but in Melee I wavedash with R for some reason so I'm not comfortable to the idea of changing R to jump in Sm4sh as it will make going back to Melee that much harder. Should I suck it up and change it to jump? Wavedash with L?

If you played the 3ds version, chances are you got used to L as grab.

So you just gotta set L to grab, z to jump.

Same place as R, pretty much, but you keep your knowledge.

R button. I'm left-handed though but somehow I'm right-dominant in most things I do.
