What Are Your Thoughts on Custom Moves?

I reallly like the idea of custom moves, it is one of my favorite things they hav added to this game. However, one thing I do not like is how you cannot use them in competitive and online battles. I understand that they wanted to keep it fair, but I think it still could have been fair with custom moves. It would have added a lot of variety to the game and I for one see it as a missed oppurtunity.

Personally I think they would make for much more interesting tournaments. I've heard many nay-sayers claiming that the matches would be more unbalanced and unfair but I believe it would be the exact opposite.

For instance, it might be able to help characters when in a disadvantageous matchup.. Let's say you get counterpicked with a slow character by a speedier one. What if you could pick some of the faster custom moves to help keep up so the matchup become more even.

The main valid (i.e. not just "It's different from Melee") complaint I've heard is that it some moves would be totally OP but I have not seen any ridiculously strong moves. While some moves are pretty much objectively better than others, overall the individual drawbacks seems to balance it out pretty well.

I guess we'll just have to see what will happen.

I love the idea of custom moves. But because they're limited online and probably in tournaments I feel like I don't even wanna bother. Because I would hate to have two versions of Ness. And I can't jump between that like that, I don't want to. It ****s with my head. I have a hard time jumping from game to game and I only use 3 mains tops.

I do want them to be used in tournaments but then it's the same problem for others, how are you gonna practice with it to the fullest when you can't use it online (in every mode)?

Yeah I don't use them that much either. But if they were allowed in competive play I would use them a lot.

You can't use Custom Moves in For Glory, so they are mostly useless to me :)

I absolutely adore the concept, but the execution is so bland. When Sakurai first announced custom moves, I thought it would be a lot more diverse. For example, here's an example of Mario's custom Down-B could be:
  • Down-B #1: F.L.U.D.D.
  • Down-B #2: Mario Tornado (same as Melee's)
  • Down-B #3: Ground-Pound (similar to Yoshi's)
Instead, we just get three different variations of the same move. It's just wasted potential.

Also, not allowing them to be used online is just the nail in the coffin.

I would say that there's a bigger chance of hem being accepted in the competitive community the way they decided to make them than what you suggested.

As it is now, every character (save for Palutena and the Miis) have one moveset. They just have slight variations of it. Some players like the range of Ganondorf's side2 (S2? Have we agreed on the terminology of custom moves yet?) while others prefer the raw power of the original.

To be honest, the fact that they are similar should mean that even newcomers to smash only have to learn one general moveset for each opponent. You still know roughly what the attack does.

I don't know how I feel about custom moves. I'm probably going to stay vanilla for a long time and it seems like a hassle to have to try and unlock all of the custom moves. I think custom moves are interesting, but I don't see anybody I know actually wanting put time into getting the moves in the first place and then thinking about custom moves to set up a moveset.

I've not bothered with them at all there is a way to make the roulette easier to help unlock them by pressing the home button to slow it down though I've not done it. I just play For Glory anyways so I don't ever use them.

Honestly, I like them. After unlocking all of them for the Doc, Robin, Falcondorf, and Lucina, none don't seem too overpowered, though I do worry about how long certain matches can be if people use the improved recoveries that don't do damage

Clash Tournaments' Invitational had custom moves allowed and nothing seemed really unbalanced or anything, although they make for some lame, non-canon stuff, the fact that they're mostly "Stronger but Slower" or "Faster but Weaker" versions of the moves makes them esentially balanced by concept. No Custom Moves would greatly hurt Smash4's meta and keep it from having its own identity, as it's the first time custom moves have been added.

The improved no-damage recoveries have one certain flaw, they're really easy to gimp/edgeguard.

I really like them, although I don't like that you can't use them online, they go to waste for people who don't have other people to play with locally. They are also kind of frustrating and overly time consuming to obtain because chances are you'll get doubles, triples etc of ones you already have or ones for characters you don't play instead of the ones you still need

I think it's wonderful. I'm having a lot of fun earning and customizing and figuring out what I think is the best combo.

They seem fine so far. I'd say let them be at tournaments until there's an actual issue. We can all theorycraft for days, but the easiest way to test is to just make an announcement saying they'll be legit for the next few tournaments to get some real data.

The only issue is the for glory thing, but then again we aren't banning battlefield(or any other legal normal stage), and people are still going to want to practice that as well. It sucks that it's so limited, but I don't see that as a strong reason to get rid of them. My only real issue is how annoying it is to grind them all(although as far as grinds go its far from the worst i've seen thanks to trophy run and classic being fairly easy).

Link's meteor bombs have been my favorite custom move... Albeit somewhat overpowered in my opinion. I could see some custom moves being allowed in tourneys, but a lot of testing would have to go into seeing how balanced they really are.

Some of them take a bit of getting used to... For example, Ike's Aether Drive sends him diagonally instead of straight up.
Not that I care about the competitive scene but I don't see much of a problem. If one particular custom move is causing a problem they could just ban the move itself.

This. At least Megaman (somewhat, in terms of some of his Up Specials, like Rush Coil being differentiated a bit from Beat), Palutena, and Mii Fighters have some variety with their moveset customizations.

Although I like custom moves, I feel like the good ones should become the new "defaults" for each character. Then again, I like how custom moves manage to make multiple references (like how Samus has access to Shinespark as an Up Special, or how Ness has access to Lucas's PK Freeze attack) while still retaining a character's original Special attack. I really wish that Palutena's default moveset was a bit modified, though; her customizations seem way more fun to use...

Regarding FLUDD, I'm hoping that one of the customizations becomes the "default" Down Special for Super Smash Bros. 5, because I hardly ever see anyone using the current standard non-damaging FLUDD that Mario currently has.

I would say that there's a bigger chance of hem being accepted in the competitive community the way they decided to make them than what you suggested.

I feel like there was an interview that stated that the removal of online moves for "With Anyone" were so that players wouldn't be "unaware" or "in the dark" about what moveset that their opponents have chosen... Unfortunately, the only reason I can find for removal at the moment is for "maintenance of game balance". Anyway, I feel like some characters could have "variety" (characters like Megaman, Pit, Link+Toon Link, and Varia Suit Samus show great potential for this) while others could have "minor variations" (such as Fox and Falco...since they essentially gave Falco an option to use Fox's Super Smash Bros. Melee/Brawl Blaster in addition to Falco's classic "Brawl" Blaster, it seems like there aren't many ideas that they can use for characters like those without being uninspiring or making someone overpowered (like giving Fox or Falco a Ray Gun for their arsenal)..

Finally, they really should have had a "Custom Moves" shop just like they did for the Trophies (arguably, Custom Moves are way more important for gameplay compared to the myriad of Trophies). It's very disappointing that you can potentially get useless duplicates for the Custom Moves and have to hope that the (pseudo)-random number generator (PRNG/RNG) is on your side - particularly when it was specifically mentioned that players wouldn't have to do "repetitive tasks" to earn 'customizables'. At least with a "Custom Moves" shop, it's not too daunting to get all of the custom moves for a given character, and you can control some aspect of acquisition aside from merely relying on random drops - such a feature would even give you more of a use for all of the Coins that you get through gameplay so that you're not forced to have an "unnecessary Coin stockpile" that you can't do much with.

Really wish they'd let custom moves into for glory. Patch it as necessary, we have already seen a patch come out, Nintendo CAN patch this game.
