Actions out of pivot, actions out of trump, B-reverse, B-stick, Wavebounce (not all charas), Slide Tossing (even if you are not using a chara who uses projectiles).
Other optional ones to learn about are Perfect Pivotting, Zaw Dancing, actions out of Perfect Pivot/Zaw Dance, ATs for your respective character.

Jump, Up-Smash and Up-B out of shield will do you good as well.

Do you think he meant competitive things or general things? I wasn't sure if he was a beginner or not. XD

He? I thought the OP was a female, don't see too many men named Jenna. Anyways...

Begineer/Intermediate Techniques:

- Pivot Grab, Pivot Tilt, and Pivot Smash(turn around and quickly perform the aforementioned actions)
- Short Hop(Tap Jump button lightly or lightly push the left analog stick upwards)
- Reverse Aerial Rush(Turning around and jumping, allows you to Back-air with forward momentum)
- Jump Cancel Toss(Push forwards or backwards, input jump, and throw immediately so that you slide and toss instead of jumping)
- Fox Trot(Flick left analog stick forwards or backwards)
- Z-Drop(When you have a item, press the Grab button in mid-air while in neutral position)
- Fastfall(Hold downwards after a jump in order to fall faster)
- DI(Hold in the direction you would like to be sent towards after being hit, allows you to live longer)
- B-Reverse(Jump forwards/backwards, use Neutral B or Side B, then immediately input opposite direction)
- B-Stick(Change right analog stick to Special instead of Smash)
- Wavebounce(Requires B-Stick. Jump forwards, input forward on C-Stick, and then input backwards on left stick)
- Cancel Airdodge Lag(Use an attack before your airdodge hits the floor)
- Running U-Smash(Run, then perform an U-Smash)
- Roll Cancelled Grab(Roll, and cancel with a grab)
- Kara F-Smash(Input forwards while simultaneously inputting F-Smash)
- Airdodge Throw(Airdodge to pick up an item and throw it immediately)
- Out of Shield Options(stuff you can do directly out of shield such as grab, jump, U-Smash, or Up B)

Advanced Techniques:

- Perfect Pivot(Input backwards, flick forwards, return to neutral. You should move while in standing position if done correctly)
- Zaw Dancing(complicated, frame-perfect version of perfect pivot)

There's probably some that I'm missing. I guarantee you that most of the stuff under beginner/intermediate are probably so natural to some that they may as well not even be listed. I tried to add as much as possible since I'm not sure what skill you're at and there's no way to know.

General and competitive both are nice.
Can you provide tutorials/explanations for these tricks, too?
EDIT: Looks like BBC7 got it. Nevermind. I'll make sure to practice these!

If you have absolutely any questions, go ahead and ask. ^^ This thread may be taken down I imagine, but my inbox is still open for questioning and such. I know there's some sort of help forum too, but I've never used it so not sure. Good luck~

The ones you need to beat your opponent. Honestly, people are talking about a lot of things. But it comes down to the following.

1. Space Control -- You want to control the distance between you and your opponent. People will talk about pivoting, DI, B Reversals, Zaw Dancing... but this is all just different sub-techniques of the same genre. The absolute goal of space-control is to trick your opponent into whiffing an attack.

The trick is very simple. You walk inside of your opponent's range, and then you walk outside of your opponent's range when he tries to hit you.

This can be as simple as jumping over your opponent's projectile, or as complicated as perfect-pivoting out of your opponent's smash range. But the concept is simple. You force your opponent to miss you, and then... technique #2 comes into play.

2. Punishment -- This one requires matchup knowledge. You need to know your own character, and your opponent's character. Every action in this game requires your opponent to dedicate resources. When you recognize your opponent's missed attack, you rush in and do your most powerful attack that is guaranteed to hit him.

For example, the majority of characters can down-smash opponents who roll towards them. It is a guarantee, if you can master the timing of the attack. You recognize your opponent's roll, and then you punish them. Another example, your opponent's Forward Smash may have 10 frames of cooldown. You may recognize the whiff, but you need to choose your most powerful attack to punish him.

A slow smash attack may not reach him in time. Or maybe, your character is Mario and your up-smash attack will actually hit him on frame 9.

3. Prediction -- You can exchange guaranteed damage for a predicted attack, that potentially gives you a better setup. If you predict your opponent to shield, for example, you can run-up and grab them. Mario can combo a lot of characters to 40% with up-tilts easily, and may prefer a combo instead of a single attack for damage.

Or maybe, you expect your opponent to side-step immediately on frame 10. Instead of striking with a up-smash during the guarenteed period, you hold and charge a forward-smash, and time it during his vulnerable period as he comes out of side-step.

With Prediction, you can exchange guaranteed damage for a more powerful, but less reliable, punishment.

-------------------

Once you master Space Control, Punishment, and Prediction, you're all set.

Also Turnaround B, different that B-reverse because your momentum is not reversed. You execute it by holding in the direction you want to turn towards, then releasing and hitting B, rather than after

- Wavebounce(Requires B-Stick. Jump forwards, input forward on C-Stick, and then input backwards on left stick)

.
Just noting that Wavebouncing does not require B-sticking. You can also execute it by combining a Turnaround B with a B-reverse (back-release-B-forward)

Like dragontamer pointed out above- the basics are the 3 P's.
Positioning. Prediction. Punishment.
Once you feel you can do that with your character, learn how to do what ATH_ mentioned.

Hey I had over 2000 online matches under my belt before I learned by chance that UpSmash/B out of shield was not the same as releasing shield and executing said attack, as I always play with tap jump off.
