What are the legitimate chances of this game being popular?

Let us say it comes out, I happen to like it (I like everything so I probably will), so I go decide to try and create a group together to hold weekly tournaments. What are the chances of no one showing up because they only play Melee, and me just having to settle with playing with my close friends, and people online?

I don't think you realize just how popular the game is

More popular on the internet or nintendo fans, Other than that it's not as big.

I think most people will just want to play the current version, I had no problem finding players for Brawl and considering the turn out for events like the Invitational and the fact that it has had two successful streams so far, I don't think this game will be any different.

Everyone plays Smash.

Literally everyone.

Like, just the other night we had a sort of get-together on my dorm floor and some guys brought an Xbox and CoD and Fifa and junk...
...but within half an hour we had that wrapped up and someone brought their Wii out and we spent the rest of the time playing Project M.

The likelihood that you have trouble getting people to play this game with you is about equal to that of the Large Hadron Collider malfunctioning and destroying the earth.

The chances the game will be popular are 100%. All Smash games have been popular, there is no evidence to suggest this one won't be.

As far as competition goes, that depends entirely on the area you live in. All my friends are hyped for Smash4, but I know a lot of places still just prefer to Melee. It's a matter of the size of your friend group and the luck of your draw

So many Melee players where I live and all they do is complain about how "awful" the new smash looks. Hence my concern, I want to play something new competitively.

Then the players around you don't know that not making the game Melee 2.0 will make it way more popular. Please, list some things they say are awful about the new Smash.

I think it'll be very popular, there's not much fear of that. Although there's a sizeable part of the community that will stick to Melee no matter what Sm4sh is like, there's also a clump of players that have moved on and are looking for something new and fresh. Sm4sh will also have dedicated online
multilayer, which will probably make a significant difference as well.

These complaints mostly come from the negative die-hard Melee players and PS4 / XBone players who are calling it "Brawl V 2.0" and say it won't be competitive, but these people can be ignored, as most of their arguments and nitpicks are baseless... seeing as nobody has played the final version yet, and these people also forget that Sm4sh will most likely have DLC / patch support if there are balance problems, which wasn't an option in the days of Brawl.

Depends, what does the final version of the game look like? Some melee fans are adverse to new smash games simply because of Sakurai's attitude toward them and the major disappointment brawl was for them. What they found fun is no longer being supported.

The way I think of it is like this. You have some kind of obscure thing you can do well in and have a lot of fun/enjoy it and maybe earn a bit of money off of. But your parent who you respected just doesn't support you despite your success and actively says what you are doing is "not right". And even far down the line they still are disapproving and refuse to understand or change despite how far you've gone with your own effort and money.

Sakurai constantly says he has to appeal to a demographic that doesn't need appealing to. These people will buy the game regardless of the mechanics and will very likely will buy the game almost regardless of what is put in there.

And then there is the deep mechanics issue/balance issue. Mostly being able to act out of certain actions like dashing or landing on the ground during an air move after minimal lag.

Honestly it is totally fine to be skeptical about the game after brawl. Heck, I'm super skeptical of a paper mario game ever being good again after super paper mario and sticker star. I refuse to spend my money on a new game despite loving paper mario if the quality or what I expect out of the game is not great. And I think your post has heavy anti-melee undertones that really I do not care for. You have nothing to worry about if the game provides enough substance for these players. And if it doesn't that is not their fault nor is it yours.

Know that feeling. I tend to just keep to my friend circle for Smashing, which has its pros and cons. There's always wifi tournaments for Smash4, though, and for casual matches the Friend Code Sharing Thread is pretty great.
