I'm rather new to competitive Melee and I'd like to know what the best buttons are for l-cancelling, wavedashing, shield, jump etc. I main Marth and currently use R for shield, l-cancelling, and wavedashing and have been using X for jumping. I know that most people will say it comes down to preference but I feel as if it's hindering my performance to use R for multiple things. Please tell me your opinions, thank you!

I recommend using different shoulder buttons for Wavedashing and shielding, though its definitely not a requirement (I myself use R for both). Also Y is slightly better than X because it allows you to move your thumb to the c-stick faster.

What are the best buttons to use? All of them.

But in all seriousness, some people say that using different shoulder buttons for different purposes is an advantage. For instance, if you want to WD OoS and are hardshielding, you can just continue holding one button in and use the other to WD. I personally use R for everything because I could just lightpress while shielding (or come out of hardpress to lightpress) and then hardpress when I need to WD. You should do is whatever feels most comfortable to you because it doesn't have a super large effect on gameplay (at least that I've noticed thus far).

BEST BUTTONS ^.^

Try using Z for aerails and L cancels. You just need to tap 1 button twice and it has less activation distance than R has

Z has considerably less space to press it down so in some situation (if not most) it would be faster to press Z instead of one of the triggers for example.
