What are the appeal of customizations?

I see tournaments on YouTube with customizations. Why add customizations but remove Mii Fighters from the tournaments? I mean both add a random element to the match especially because you don't know exactly who you are up against? Do you guys understand why they are liked? Is it just because I am thinking way to competitively and closed minded? If I am I really want to know they are liked so much. I want to understand and accept them.

I personally think they add depth and diversity to any match. (Not that the huge Smash Bros. cast isn't already diverse enough!) Although I think Miis should be allowed... I like using the swordfighter Mii.

See, I think they could have approached that differently. Honestly, I wouldn't have minded if they ripped of Mortal Kombat X's model where there is a choice between SET variants of each fighter. THAT right there is genius. Different styles of gameplay but everyone knows what they are getting.
