What are some of the best characters to pick up when starting out?

So i have played Melee for a long time and i am just now trying PM but i dont know what character people suggest to get used to the game

marth, mario, shiek. they're solid characters, teach you good fundamentals on spacing and how to work the metagame, and are decently forgiving while you get used to recovering. they also don't have any weird quirks going on that aren't as useful for much of the main cast (like starting on snake or lucario or yoshi would).
