What are my options when my opponent is on a ledge?

I'm on the stage. He's hanging on the ledge. I almost always screw this up. What am I supposed to do when he's getting up? dsmash? He'll roll too far away. Is there any way to predict what he's going to do or a specific protocol? I typically play Dedede, Lucario, Pikachu, and Little Mac, so if there are character-specific strategies, these are the ones I'd like to know.

Hey there, for questions such as these please refer them to the Gameplay Advice and General Discussion Thread. There are a lot of options you can use. First you can ledge trump. This means grab the ledge after your opponent grabs it and you will remove him from there and you can proceed to use an aerial to gimp your opponent or go for the kill if at high percentages. You can also stand at the distance where you can cover the get-up attack, the roll, or your opponents jump and react accordingly from there.
