All I've done is have the L button be grab.
The only other thing I've done is have L button be jump, I couldn't adjust over a week of playing with it.

The best controls are the ones you're comfortable with.

There's not much to it beyond that. If you already play well with what you have, don't try to force yourself into adjusting to somebody else's scheme.

I use tilt-stick and L-jump. I also always turn off a+b-smash and rumble, but I keep tap-jump.

I haven't tried tilt-stick, what is that like? What advantages/disadvantages does it bring?
-U-tilts are easier for tap-jump users.
-You keep the momentum when sticking aerials. (Smash stick doesn't for some dumb reason)

I have x set to grab and tap jump off (rumble too I think). x to grab makes it far easier to perform grabs without having to reach for that darn z button (maybe it's just difficult for me for some reason), but if you leave both l and r to shielding you can use the double tap method for teching. Meaning, tap one or the other just an instant before the other when trying to perform a tech to increase the odds of getting it. But no matter what setup you go with, just keep trying even if it seems weird for awhile. I had to play for dozens of hours to get used to no tap jumps and combos using jump; in the end it's worth it if you're switching to help solve a previous issue you're having.

I turned my tap-jump off and set my c-stick to attack.

I have my tap-jump off, my L set to specials, my X set to grab, and my C-stick set to specials. I know the last one seems off, but when trying for something that requires precise timing (Luigi up special, Jigglypuff rest), flicking the stick is better than a button combo IMHO.

I switch off tap jump and use c-stick for tilts.

Except when I'm playing Palutena, when I switch c-stick to smashes.

I have tap jump off, ZR set to jump, ZL set to shield, and C-stick set to attack. Everything else is default. (I may have a picture later.)

Yeah I probably would switch my controls around like that, but since I have been playing Smash for 3 years now, I won't be able to get used to controls that are different.
