::UPDATED INFO::

What’s up everyone,

I was recently handed an opportunity to make a potentially large annual event for the West side of Michigan. I have connections with a card shop in Grand Rapids called Alpha players. They do a gaming convention every year there and it mostly focuses around card and board games but this event could use some growth to say the least.

It is a large venue and there is a lot unused space and I thought it would be an awesome idea to do a Smash tournament there. We would have access to the venue for both Saturday and Sunday. This means we could do 3 - 4 different games if we have enough support.

This is where you guys come in.

I would like to know if there are any tournament organizers or anybody interested in helping out or participating in an event like this. I have organized quite a few tournaments before back in 2005-2007. But coming back after a 7 year hiatus is a little challenging. So if anyone could help me situate the logistics of this or be willing to help me TO some of the events please let me know.

Here is the FB page for the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/623498001088985/

Event: Equinox: West Michigan Gaming Convention

Date: April 11th - 12th

Venue: 28th Street Showplace: 1256 28th Street Southwest, Wyoming, MI 49509

Schedule:

Venue fee: $5 ( This also covers cost to get into the convention and check it out!)
Event Fee: $13

*$3 waived if you bring a set up. If you bring a set up for another game you plan on participating in as well you get another $3 off for that game as well.

Saturday:
1:00-4:00 - P;M singles pools > Top 8 finals double elimination.

*East vs West P;M crew battle (tba)

5:00-8:30 - Smash 4 singles pools > top 8 finals double elimination.

Sunday:
12:30 - 1:30 Smash N64 singles double elimination.

2:00 - 4:30 smash melee singles pools > top 8 finals double elimination.

Yeah I already talked to Root about PM and I'm pretty sure he's down. I would like to get about 2-3 TO's per event if possible just so that people that are TOing can compete without being overwhelmed with responsibilities.
As far as N64, I'm thinking whichever has more support and numbers between Brawl and N64 will take that 4th spot. But I have to be unbiased about the choice. I would like to get solid numbers for whichever event we choose.

There's a lot of critical questions, we should be asking, but most critically: How big is our venue space? That hugely affects how many games and events (if we're running doubles stuff too) are actually possible to run. Based on that, we need to decide how many entries we can expect, and based on that how many setups would be required to run any given event effectively, which then works back into how much floor space we actually have. If we're looking to make this a gigantic, national-level tournament (as some are suggesting) I don't see why we can't enlist Juggleguy and Co. to make this the greatest event we can. Online registration would be ideal as well and would need a month or two advance notice. Getting a solid staff together and a concrete ruleset and schedule is also imperative.

All that said I'm really into this idea and will TO for PM and Melee without a question, and 64 is possible as well should it be available.

Thanks a lot for the reply! The venue size itself is quite large. They hold all sorts of conventions, flea markets and even cage fighting. The only problem is we also have to share that space with an area of people playing MTG, store vendors and art booths. I was there last year as an M.C. and still there was quite a bit of unused square footage. What I am going to have to do effectively is lobby for space if you will lol. I know the guy that runs this pretty well as do a lot of my good friends and If he has reason to believe that there will be a large turnout he will give us more space.

Eventually I would like this to be a nation-level tournament but before I can think about that I have to gain the confidence of some people to secure this event consistently.

This is excitement. I would be glad to assist TOing for PM. I recommend seeking out ZeroToDeath to headline. Top qaulity streaming/recording.

Awesome! Thanks so much for the support. I guess my next thing to figure out is what events on what days. I was thinking wii u and melee on Saturday and N64 and PM on Sunday.
