Went to my first tournament today... got bodied.

I'm not disappointed, I actually think I did pretty well considering I don't L-Cancel and can't Wavedash consistently. I was surprised how good everyone was considering I live in the middle of nowhere. Apparently there's these 3 guys, ALP, Cloud, and PAX, and one of them is #3 in Texas. But I couldn't find anything on them? Anyway.

I main Sheik. I went up against two Falcos. First one bodied me and became my sensei. Second one 3-stocked me game 1, and then I almost took game 2. I was considering maining Ganondorf at first, especially because I'm such a theatrical person... but after today's experience. Nuh-uh. I'm going to have to Sheik all the way.

I did friendlies for a couple of hours. I actually had a hard time against this Luigi player. But my Ganondorf did just as well as my Sheik did. I think I even managed to take a game with him, unlike with my Sheik. Who the heck has a Ganondorf that's as good as their Sheik, huh? I guess that speaks to the quality of my Sheik...

It was pretty cool playing, even though I didn't do that well. For the first time, my Sheik's fairs got crouch canceled, which confused the hell at out of me at first, since I've never seen anyone crouch cancel IRL before. I also learned that Luigi and Mario have ridiculous recoveries, which caused me to discover the joy in gimping. It's kind of scary ledge dashing and going deep in there, but it's really rewarding. I just had to think "if I die, I die." And surprisingly, I think out of the 20 times I attempted it, I only SDed twice.

I also learned about stages and counter-picks. I still don't really understand the system. We did rock-paper-scissors, then I struck one, they struck two, and I struck the last one and chose the stage, I think. I don't know why this happens, but as long as I can ban Final Destination, I'm happy.

Speaking of stages... playing for so long, so hard, caused me to learn what stages I like, and why. My favorite ended up being Yoshi's Story, because it's small, and I don't really have to think as hard about how I approach, I can just go nuts. I realized I hate Final Destination, because it's so large, meaning I have to get creative so people don't figure out how I'm approaching them. Plus, I feel like it's harder to kill people there.

Other things I realized is that I think I need to buy a new controller. I don't think my grab button works that well, and I think maybe learning chain-grabbing might help me against Falco, if I'm not mistaken. I actually avoided grabbing because my timing was consistently ****ed, and I feel like that's probably taking one of Sheik's most useful tools out of the equation.

I want to practice on Netplay, but I'm kind of frustrated because I want a laptop that can run it without lag, but I don't want to drop $800 or something. I don't want to spend more than $500. I heard someone got it to run on a $100 Chromebook, but I'm having a hard time finding details. If anyone could help me figure this out, that would be nice.

Lastly, I live in an area that's 90% Mexican. It got me to wondering if Mango and Hungrybox are Mexican, too. I guess when I get good maybe I can get a "Mexico!" chant going and see what happens. It might confuse people since I'm Pakistani though, haha.

I guess I'm kind of rambling right now, I just have a lot of thoughts, given it was my first experience. I actually came only for Melee, but I registered for Smash 4 also. Amusingly, I only won games in Smash 4. And for some reason, everyone hates Sonic, which really confused me, because why? He's not top tier like Sheik or Rosalina... and he keeps getting nerfed for some ridiculous reason. It was like I was Mayweather every match, lol.

I don't know where to put this, but I think I finally understand why I main Sheik, and what I like the most about Melee. I might be totally wrong, but my guess is that I don't have any tech skill, and Sheik is the best character that doesn't require any. I've wondered if someday I'll switch to a spacie if I get good, but I think the answer is no. I just don't like Star Fox. I know that's a n00b thing to say, but that's my commitment. The only other two characters I'm interested in are G-Dorf and Samus. But I don't think I can practice G-Dorf against anyone, because they're so good at this point, it's going to result in me getting demolished every time.

The reason why I like Melee? Lots of reasons, but my very favorite thing is Sheik's fair. It's fast, it hits hard, and it just feels so right. I think my favorite thing to do in the game at this moment is gimp people's recoveries with it. Especially Fox and Falco.

Sorry if I went on very long, I know this probably isn't very interesting to anyone else. I was just stunned because not only was this my first tournament experience, but people down here are actually pretty good. Or at least, waaaay better than me. I might only be down here for one more year, but maybe I can become the best, and avenge my dead friend.

Never be disappointed to lose your first tournament, it's normal, and always happens. You're gonna keep getting bodied for a few tournaments, but don't let it discourage you, think of tournaments as a place to learn. Mario and Luigi both have terrible recoveries, just understand how they work and it's easy to gimp. It's always nice to see new people. My advice is to keep playing, and don't give up.

The only reason you have no tech skill is cuz you haven't practiced. I had no tech three months ago, now I can easily Wavedash, ledgedash, SHFFL, waveland, blah blah blah without much trouble. Sheik's really technical, just not at low levels.

Not necessarily, but it's probably because you haven't TRIED to get technical.

Play Ganon.

http://smashboards.com/forums/ganondorf.110/

There are lots of resources on how to catch up to the metagame on the G boards, and like 10+ good Ganondorf players post regularly.
I really want to, I just get discouraged when I hear that Bizzarro Flame got 90-something at EVO, and kage got 60-something only due to also using Captain Falcon. If they're the best Ganondorf players, what hope is there for me? Meanwhile, as a Sheik, I can idolize Plup or Druggedfox or M2K.

I know I have a loooong way to go before I even reach that ceiling... but bah, encourage me. I really do love G-Dorf. I know I am a son of the King of Darkness. When I saw Bizzarro Flame's theatrical disrespect, and kage channeling his inner rage, I understood that these were my people. My friend also has told me than I run like Ganondorf. Also, for some reason when I see Ganondorf, I think "father."

I know I'm not really making any sense right now, I'm so damn tired. I think I should buy some eyedrops because staring at the TV for hours with my brain really took its toll on me. Ha ha ha.

You can't base your own potential off other players' performance. Especially one tournament.
That's a good point. I guess if it wasn't for Axe, people wouldn't think twice about Pikachu, and if it wasn't for Mango or Hungrybox, people wouldn't care about Jigglypuff. I guess it wouldn't hurt to keep working on my Ganondorf alongside my Sheik... besides, I never know who I might freak out with matchup inexperience when I bust out the King of Thieves.

Dude i started placing top 10 out of 50 or so people my first year, but you gotta go hard at the game to get good fast. The best thing to do is get a crew. join one or make one. Just get a crew.
Speaking of getting good fast, this Sheik VS G-Dorf dilemma is driving me nuts. I have no doubts I could be a great G-Dorf player, but between med school, writing books, and music, I wonder if I'll be able to improve fast enough to see returns on my investment at any appreciable rate.

My free time will shoot up dramatically in 5 years, during which I could go ham on G-Dorf, but who even knows what the state of Melee will be by then...

Only directed, considered, effort will yield the results you desire. First go through your move set. Just do every move once or twice to be mindful of all your options. Next make a list (actually write down) Everything you can't do yet and do it. ALSO PRO TIP!!! Watch yourself while practicing alone to perfect tech skill for consistency sake BUT!!! During actual matches don't take your eyes off of your opponent. You know what you're gonna do. You're the one doing it. Watch them cuz that's how you'll get the reads for Gannon kills. Also if u want to beat any low teir player learn your out of shield options. Shielding isn't bad, but being stuck in shield is hell. Punishing OOS (out of shield) Will tear through the start of losers bracket!
