Went to 1st Tourney (Xanadu Weekly, Thoughts on Input Lag)

I Took my first trip to Xanadu this Tuesday....

I performed horribly and lost to average players who had predictable playstyles and I missed several opportunities to punish because of a multitude of factors which I will list below:

1) Input lag , response time and monitor latency on monitors was much more delayed then the monitor I have been playing smash 4 with the BENQ XL2420G, this really threw me off. Xanadu welcomes people bringing their own setups. Unfortunately this means people can unknowingly bring very laggy monitors , and it is basically down to RNG which monitor you end up at, you have to sit at this monitor and play the game or are you are given a DQ. I get that due to the large crowd bringing your own equipment is encouraged but people should have the option not to play on laggy monitors.

To give you an idea in fighting game terms of how much lag bad monitors have its usually between 3-6+ frames of input lag, compared with 0 for CRTs and less then 1 frame for top of the line monitors. Frame windows are very crucial for moves that require specific timing, like air dodges, spot dodges, counters, falcon knee, moves with sweet spots, perfect shielding, etc.

To give you an idea of how it felt to me, it was basically like playing an entirely different game of smash bros. Certain moves were unpunishable on the laggy monitor I played on (80+ ms of lag) I ended up dying to random smash attacks...

I was used to playing smash 4 crisp and responsively, but on most of the LCD's it felt much like it would playing on a generic LCD TV with tons of lag.

The best monitors at the venue were older BENQ's but they appeared to be older models and had about 20-25 ms more input lag and higher response time then my BenQXL2420G with 10 ms. Many people brought their own monitors. Several of these monitors had very noticeable input lag on them, which I personally feel affected the outcome of people who were assigned to these monitors matches, regardless of whether they noticed this or not.

I asked one of the staff about this , he told me if you bring your own equipment you are welcome to play tournament matches on it. If I ever go to Xanadu again I will definitely be doing this. I can't stand playing fighting games on bad monitors.

Small TLDR:
Certain moves and strategies, specifically stuff that required precise timing to counter or execute (perfect shielding) were extremely hard to punish on certain monitors due to input lag on them of 40-70 ms, if you don't think this affects a person after playing on CRTs or 10ms monitors...well...it does...

2) I was not used to the large amount of people in a rather small comparable area. There were about 150+ people packed into an area about the size of a 3-4 bedroom house. Im not complaining, but if you've never been in an environment like this it can be very distracting to say the least. - MY B, should probably bring ear plugs next time.

3) Recently switched to the Gamecube controller from the WII U Pro and did not practice at all in two weeks. I use tap jump.
This messed me up, I also recently switched shield and tap jump shoulder buttons, further compounding the issue.

4) Nerves, never been to a tourney before, pressure got to me...

5) General lack of practice against certain characters due to the lack of a Smash scene in my area.

6) Arrived late , no time for friendlies. Hadn't played smash 4 in two weeks prior to this.

7) I didn't play my best, and yeah, its not a good feeling.

TLDR; Fighting game tourneys should be using either CRT's or LCDs with 10ms or less of input lag. Forcing people to laggy monitors can alter potential matchups and change the outcome of games..

Good tourney, great staff, great players.... only caveat was the monitors, obviously 90% of gamers think every monitor is the same and are going to say this is an excuse but w/e.

I had fun and it was a eye opening experience for me regardless, just gotta make sure and bring my stuff next time.

Regardless of what you think, input lag and response time matters and I feel like it has a huge impact on how smooth and repsonsive the game feels. . Certain strategies and moves are much harder to punish on laggy monitors because you don't see them come out as soon as the input is pressed, but rather only as soon as the monitor draws them.

Accordingly, it is very hard to falcon knee for me on laggy monitors and much easier on responsive ones...

Sorry about the monitor issue, sounds like the event was fun besides that.

The tournaments where I live are much smaller than Xanadu, I'd love to go to an event like that!

Had the exact same problem at the exact same venue. I'm not a great player by any means, but I felt like I did a lot worse than I normally do due to playing on the laggy TVs vs my super responsive gaming monitor, and the crowd and noise didn't help either.

My only advise is to bring headphones and get some warm up matches in to help get acclimated as best you can.
