Welcome to the Weekly Nintendo Corner! Every week as the weekend nears, Smashboards will be covering a title from the Nintendo pantheon. Most of the time, these are new releases or games that are coming out soon, but do expect surprises - every once in awhile, there may be an old classic or forgotten treasure thrown in! Check back every week for the scoop on upcoming Nintendo games.

Pokemon Art Academy

This week's topic is a new release in the Art Academy series! Pokemon: Art Academy is a special spin-off that has already been released in several regions, and is making its way to North America this month. The series is all about helping new artists and amateurs learn the basic skills of an artist. Pokemon: Art Academy has a few special features than just name recognition.

For those new to the Art Academy series, it contains several lessons designed to help newcomers learn the basics of drawing. One feature, available in recent installments, is being able to take pictures and import them for use as reference material in free draw mode. This makes it so that while the game offers a small amount of lessons, one can continue to learn while using their own topics as a base.

The largest difference between Pokemon: Art Academy and its predecessors is (of course) being able able to draw Pokemon instead of more typical Art Academy drawings. This means aspiring artists can learn about Animal Anatomy, something that hasn’t been covered much in Art Academy titles past.

This installment of Art Academy is known for having a wide variety of artistic styles and degrees of difficulty. Simplistic shapes to incredibly complex animal anatomy is covered; both complete newcomers and fledgling freelancers will find a challenge here.

Features

Not only is Pokemon Art Academy a nice addition to the on-going Art Academy series, but the game also features some of the following features exclusive to this installment;

Mega Evolution Pokemon - When all of the Normal, Apprentice, and Graduate classes are done, three bonus lessons unlock for Mega Evolved Pokemon.

TCG Transfer - The art created is able to be transferred to a Pokemon Trading Card Game border upon completion with the option to add a background image – These will be able to be printed out and used in your very own TCG deck!

Miiverse Functionality / Art Contests – Pokemon Art Academy will be having contests over Miiverse! Internet sharers will be able to put Miiverse functionality to use and post up your drawings.

Downloadable Content - Are the existing Pokemon available to draw not satisfying enough to quench your artistic appetite? Downloadable content will be available as special promotions over Nintendo Network! Some of these will only available for a limeted time. Groudon and Kyogre have already been made available in other regions, but they're assumed to come back for the U.S. release date. For any who currently have a copy in Australia and New Zealand, a Shiny Mega Gengar reference image is available for download right now.

About the Team

Pokemon Art Academy is being developed by Headstrong games. This developer has been the driving force behind the Battalion Wars series, the rest of Art Academy, and Rabbids Rumble. Check out their development history here. The studio is located in London, England and is owned by Kuju Entertainment.

Pokemon Art Academy is already available in all regions except North America, and will be coming to North America in both digital download and physical format for $29.99 on October 24th, 2014!

Will you be doing some art? Have you played an entry in the Art Academy series before? Still too busy with Smash Bros. for 3DS? Let us know in the comments below!

I for one am very excited for this to come out. I used to draw Pokemon as a little kid, and learning how to do it and make them actually look good is definitely worth 30 dollars to me.

Looks interesting... Sadly don't have the cash for this, I do have one of the DSi Ware titles in the Art Academy Series. Its basically the only thing I use to draw... I should probably update it to this one eventually.

Ooh, awesome. I've heard the tools are a lot cleaner than the Sketchpad version on Wii U. So yeah, I'll definitely get this at some point, when I have the money. The Sketchpad version is still good and all, but the colors didn't come out as smooth as I wanted them to in this picture:

Of course, I have little experience drawing with colors, so that may be the problem. XP

I find it cool how smash boards uploads tons of stuff for pokemon as well. It's great to see both of my two favourite competitive games closely intertwined c:

But that implies that we all want to eventually play Art Academy. When obviously that's not the case :yeahboi:
It doesn't. If I say I haven't watched Titanic yet, nothing that I've said implies that I want to. That would require me to say 'but I want to.'

I never heard of this Artists series so when I saw the title of the post part of me was thinking this was a Pokemon version of Mario Paint, then I saw there was no sign of a music maker.

Same here, I had that little How To Draw Pokémon paperback a long time ago... I may still have it actually. And I could definitely use some animal-esque drawing tips.

I have that how to draw pokemon book too... I cheated it and used trace paper... I was a horrendous drawer then, and arguably still am, but I have improved.

if anything, the art is very nice.

for a while I checked every post in the community but once it got kind of backed up I couldn't feasibly look through all the images I missed since Nintendo is dumb and won't make a good Miiverse website.

Isn't just buying real art supplies and paper more fun and (initially) cheaper?

As someone who loves both drawing and pokemon my opinion isn't exactly unbiased... But I think it's great!

It's a waste of cash imo. There are much better and free art tutorials to find on the internet, most which don't just involve specific pokemon.

i find this a waste of time from the developers... no one is really waiting for a pokemon spinoff like this... really, do we actually need a drawinggame? Just look online for some tuts about drawing the pokemon or just don't cuz there's no actual goal in doing this anyways... What's the use of drawing pokemon as a game? Anyways, to me it's not worth the money. Maybe i'd gave it 10 euro's but nothing more.

Well, look at it this way, would you rather be painting something, only to screw-up? In an art program you could easily fix the screw-up, where on actual paper it would be a nightmare to try and fix. Not to mention this is basically like letting you draw with a drawing pad, which for 30 bucks is pretty damn cheap. And the good and useful art software on PC's and the like can get pretty overpriced for what they are worth. This is definitely worth it short-term and long-term for artists.

To you it may not be worth the money, but from the looks of it you don't understand this is and isn't a game. its not a game because its basically a pretty awesome art program. The bonus is teaching how to draw pokemon, but you can completely ignore that. Plus, a waste of time from developers? Really? I mean come on. If it was a waste of time they wouldn't release it over in NA. Sure it might not be YOUR thing, but don't call it a waste of time.

But isn't it clear that there is no "No, I never will." option?!
