Hello forum peeps. New here and recently a friend loaned me his Wii, an sd card with Project M on it, and a G Cube controller. I've played with him for fun but he plays competitively and I'd love to one day be on his level. I know about some of the more advanced techniques from what he's shown me (L Cancelling and Short Hopping) but I never really practiced them and I can't exactly do them well. Any tips for the best way to practice and tips in general for someone starting out? Thanks in advance.

Just practice technical stuff on your own and remember that it's just about muscle memory and not about playing smart on your own. Unfortunately computers are easily exploitable so you'll need your friend around to work on defensive play and making reads and all that jazz.

I think some of the best techniques to start with learning is l-cancelling (vital), and then work on out of shield options. Practice just jumping out of shield, and eventually practice air attacks out of shield, upB out of shield, and Usmash oos.

Of course, a lot of what you want to start out learning will be dependent on your character. Wavedashing is pretty small for a character like Ganon, but a complete necessity for someone like Luigi. UpB oos is god like for bowser and non existent for Puff.

Who do you plan on using?

I've personally taken a liking to Diddy Kong, but at the moment, I'm practicing with Fox mostly to nail all the tech stuff. From what I've read, if you can do most stuff with him consistently, you can pretty much do it with all other characters (minus the character specific tech stuff of course).

Most of what you called advanced tactics really isn't that advanced. Plenty of people use these tactics and aren't close to caring about competitive play. Regardless, I think what should be pointed out to you is that even though having fast reflexes will obviously help you out - playing smart will do you even better. Like learn how to power shield (if you don't know how already) and knowing to read someone's tactics. Like me. I'm easy to read with my Roy because he's a very straight forward character with a lot of hidden depth and most of his tactics rely on being able to actually go ape-**** on your opponent and getting in their face while setting up combos (which involve a lot of higher level tactics though). But, when I switch to characters like Samus, or Lucario my game plan changes entirely - not just because I am using someone entirely different but because the general idea, to using them is very different. And, like I implied earlier (or meant to) one of the biggest things you absolutely must know is the overall mechanics of your character - they're not necessarily hard to learn, but extremely essential.

Eh, but I'm mostly stating the obvious. Just approach higher level players and ask for advice.
