That usually only works with floatier characters, like Marth, Luigi, etc, and only when your wavedash goes far enough off the stage. Spacies still grab the ledge even if you hold away, and if your wavedash barely gets you off, even floatier characters will grab it.What sinji said.
But if you want to fall slower holding away can be a lil more convenient.

What? I've never heard of how hard you hold down affecting fall speed. I thought it was just:just hold down on the control stick. hold it slightly to fall slowly or hold it hard to drop faster. You'll get used to it.
My wavedash always gets me off...and if your wavedash barely gets you off
If you're entering the tumble animation it's because you're holding your shield as you slide off. If you want to just experiment with it, pick Luigi and WD off a platform and keep the trigger held in. The lighter characters actually go all the way into the tumble so they can tech. It looks a lot more janky with fast fallers because they don't flip all the way so they will start to go into tumble but still land on their feet.So I've been practicing the Zhu: waveshine turnaround bair. The problem isn't getting off the edge, my problem is that sometimes, I'll drop exactly like how Zhu does it, but other times, I'll stumble through the air.
Is there a way to fix this?
