Was it ever stated of the R button for shielding had to be held down completely or part way?

I'm not american so I can't say what SSB4 has but, in Brawl, a shield required the contact at the end of the R button's travel to be made and I would assume that SSB4 would be similar. If you want a shorter button press, this can be achieved by inserting something into the R button's internal (hollow) stick to lengthen it or by keeping the button depressed fully when it is connected or the console is powered on.

The latter works because the controller sees a change in the state of the end contact and assumes it has been hit but the R button is programmed to only trigger a signal to the console when its slider is also moved. As such, a full depression would actually register no shield under this setup.

This will be the deciding factor for me in the decision between using a pro controller or a gamecube controller.

Unfortunately the smash demo at smashfest wasnt set up for gamecube controllers, alot of people, including me, brought our controllers from home in case it was. The pro controller felt good though.
