vs G&W

i know g&w should be one of the easier enemies to face, but i'm new to olimar:
his turtle just ***** my pikmin, he's playing mindgames on me like hell and g&w's downsmash is just broken.
any tips how to approach, either that shielding everything until you can grab and then run around recovering the shield .,,.?
