I've been playing against a very good falco for a while now, we're to the point where the match can go either way every time we play; however, the one thing tipping the scale in his favor on stages like Final destination/Dreamland is the shinespike combo.

My question is, is it possible to tech (on the ground, not the edge) out of the spike portion of the combo while you are still staggered? I've heard that it (falco's combo) can be punished pretty badly by a prepared Marth and I wondered if it was due to teching it, or just avoiding it entirely.

At low percents, you're free to move before you touch the ground, which means you're also free to attack. Fair to grab would be your best option.

Is that the only time? I usually get out of it at lower %s by doing just as you say, I was just wondering if there was some way of getting out of it at the mid to higher %s.

Above around 50 %, you'll be able to tech on the ground. Until that time, you'll just have to try to get a fair in or take the shine combo like a man. If you're playing on dreamland, DI towards the edge. That way he won't be able to get you with a shine combo onto the top platform.

I'm sure that Massive appreciates your help, FrostByte, but Falco's DAir in PAL is a meteor, not a spike. Thanks for the posts though; they can help PAL players.

If shinespike combo = pillar and stagger = the times when you get hit by DAir low %'s so that you don't bounce off the ground, then I don't know how to deal with it. You can, however, try shielding the shine and then if they full jump and fastfall DAir, jump out of shield and quickly use Counter.

Uh, Falco's dair is a spike in the PAL version. That and the aerial wizards foot. Maybe Marth recieves stun in NTSC because of his heavier weight.

Shinespike combo is referring to the times falco connects the shine portion of a pillar or just a shine and begins jumping into the air and comboing you with dair into the ground, then immediately comes back down with another shine/dair.

I generally deal with the pillaring pretty well; retreating fair(s) throw off his timing and i'll grab and uthrow to fsmash or utilt him; but the few times he connects a shine I'm pretty much at his mercy until he messes up the combo.

I guess a clearer version of my original question is, is it possible to tech a spike, and if so, what's the timing on it?

If you're playing on dreamland, DI towards the edge.
That's good advice, i'll keep that in mind.

Yes, its possible to tech a spike, just like the timing of all other techs. Most of the time you will fly past the edge from his spike so with good di, you can edgetech it.
