Well, I'm taking the SATS really soon, so I want to beef up my vocab and I stumbled upon this. I'm not advertising in the slightest, I just want to share a way for people to build their vocabulary, because I know that someone on these boards is taking the sat too and may need the same help I do. So I want to share this in hopes of someone benefiting from it as I am

wow thats pretty cool of people to do something like this.if you get one vocab question right, they donate 10 grains of rice to the united nations (which obviously supply the starving people of this world).and even though i wont be taking the sats until @ least next year,i'm definitely going to bookmark it.

I like to compare level in terms of how long it took... like, I got 48 in about 500 grains.

Lies!

If you think it through, and trust your instinct (it hard to explain what I mean), you can use pretty much your whole life experience to answer the question. If I've heard one of the words before, or a part of the word, or even a word that sounds similar, I'll know what it means.

Well, the first time I did it, I got to 50 in 490 grains. The second, it was in 1000-something grains of rice.

While this is a pretty cool site, it will not prep you well for the SAT. You're better off just reading (books, newspapers) or using a prep book of some sort that has bunches of vocab in it.

Reading editorials, learning latin, learning how to disect a word's Prefix/Suffices(plural term i believe),learning how to chart (Its a reading technique, unfortunately i forgot how to do it) would be a good place to start.

I started to take it, but then got bored.

This is why I will never know my IQ. I get too bored of taking the test =D

I never studied for my ACTs, and I didn't take SATs. If I were going to go to college, it would have been for art...so my scores didn't matter that much anyways.

This is a pretty nice. It won't necessarily built your vocabulary all to well, but it seems to be great for testing and seeing where you stand.

Well, considering you're a Frenchwoman, I'd be surprised if you did well.

Many of those words are extremely obscure, and require a very lateral knowledge of English that native speakers just don't have. Although I must say that many of the words sounded remarkably French.

And I think it's good not to know one's IQ. When I found out mine, I started thinking of myself and others differently. It is not cool to think you're better than other people because of something that you can't even control. I learned that slowly, the hard way.

i agree with this
While this is true, it helps provide practice for breaking down sections of words, such as prefixes and suffixes, resulting in a strengthened ability to dissect foreign words. Therefore, besides helping you learn new words (that are most likely forgotten anyway), it allows for practice of recognizing how to break apart words to provide the best possible educated guess.

The SAT is an exam run by the College Board (a private company) in the United States. Most high school juniors or seniors take it. Getting a good score helps you get into college, while some colleges won't let you in at all if your score is too low.

It has three sections: Writing, Reading, and Mathematics.

The reading and especially the writing sections are heavy on the vocabulary.

1. Do you live in America?
2. If you answered yes, have you observed your surroundings, especially in school?

If you answer yes, you should take heed and realize that most American kids in this generation are as dumb as ****. Unless there's some sort of European baby boom and they all are geniuses and get pushed to high school where they take their version of the SATs, then it won't supply the earth. **** it would barely suffice for one country, let alone the world

If you answered no, then join your American friends in being a bunch of ignorant, drooling, idiots who don't have a care.

Before you ask, yes I am an American, and at the top of all my classes:)

On a totally different note, I think SATs are HORRIBLE ways to determine student college placement. Most all of my friends are super smart, but they can't take tests worth Jack, despite having studies weeks, sometimes MONTHs ahead of time (The read ahead....even I don't do that)

Wow... that's pretty... harsh on us Americans. I assure you that being born in America doesn't make you stupid. We might be more apathetic toward education than more countries, but our 40-60 work week is much higher than the average European one (but lower than Asian ones). I still agree that Americans could use a lot more intellectuality, but it's not as bad as it sounds. I promise we don't talk the way we comment on YouTube.

My sister, an educator, thinks the SATs are horrible as well, because, since it's a test, being good or bad at tests affects your score a lot. But that's one good thing about the American school system: we rely on testing much less than most nations.

You must've not read my entire post, I said I WAS AMERICAN, born and raised. After interacting with some of my fellow students, I will stand by my Pro-Canadian statement in my sig.

I'm glad someone agrees with me. I think they should do SATs like oraly, that would be the best way I believe

I did read that. I still stand by my statement that I think you're being a bit harsh on us Americans.

But check out FreeRice.org now!

20 GRAINS PER CORRECT ANSWER!

Now we give twice as much. And it only tells your vocabulary level once every 5 words, I think. And now there's only one big ad, instead of 3 small ones.

They've made a bunch of changes. They must be doing well to double their output.
