Vertex and what they do

Hey, i saw this very cool model and it was a texture and a vertex, now my one rule is dont get it if its a vertex. But this one was very cool so i would like to know what a vertex does before I overrule all of them. I've been told it affects animations but not sure if it will effect gameplay. Thanks in advance

As long as the vertex doesn't have any edits to the bones it's fine. If it changes the bones, then it changes the moves and how the animation looks.
