We've upgraded vBulletin, our forum software, to the latest version. Naturally it includes a number of features that you're probably interested in learning about. Here are the highlights:
- Every user now has a totally revamped profile page. Think Facebook. You can now leave "visitor messages" for other users right on their profile page, just like you might write on a friend's Wall. You can also send friend requests to other users so they'll show up as a friend on your profile. Your profile will also contain some other information about you; like before, people will be able to see your contact information, etc., but your profile will also list things like the groups you've joined (more on that later) and the stages you've submitted to the Stage Browser. Important note: by default, anyone can leave you a visitor message on your profile. You can change this setting in your User CP, under Edit Options. I know people are going to be asking about this, so if you don't want strangers leaving you messages on your profile, change this setting!
- Social groups. These are just like "groups" as you'd find them on Facebook, too, but they're different than the usergroups that we have around now. Social groups are groups that anyone can create, for pretty much any purpose they like. Crews, regions, clans, and Chuck Norris fans are all welcome to create their own social groups and talk about virtually anything. For those of you who found yourself wanting to post general chit-chat in your Regional Zones, or for those whose clan threads got a bit out of hand, social groups are for you. Group creators can set different privacy levels for their groups too, so that new members may be required to obtain permission before joining, and users who are not part of the group can be required to join before they can see any group messages. Check it out.
- Tagging. You can now tag threads to help other people find what they're looking for. If you ever used a tagging system anywhere before, it's pretty straightforward--if you haven't, it's still pretty straightforward.
- Social bookmarking. You can now easily submit threads to places like Digg or del.icio.us, right from SWF.
