Using tech skills in game

Sorry if this is in the wrong section; I've never used smash forums before:

I picked up melee a few days ago and I'm having trouble implementing tech skills into my game play.

In training mode or vs a low level cp for practice I can repeatedly wavedash or shffl or jc grab with no error but in an actual battle I have trouble finding any practical time to do it. Or even if i try to force myself to do it in the middle of a battle it seems to screw up my gameplay and cost me a stock or a lot of dmg.

Basically, can anyone help give tips, strats, ect. to help me be able to implement these techs into my gameplay?

Try doing consecutive wavedashes and L-cancels when you're training. When you L Cancel a lot in training mode, you'll get used to automatically doing it when you do air attacks in game.

I can L cancel fine and I've practiced constantly wd in training mode for hours but when it comes to gameplay I can't find any opportunities to fit it into my plays. it's not that I can't wd so much, but it's that I can implement it in my game

It's a matter of psychology. You know how to do these techs in training mode and against CPUs, but in a different environment, your mind isn't as set for the occasion of an actual game. You have fewer memory cues needed to do them

Keep trying to do these techs vs human players. Don't care about losing. Care about being able to do them

As EPsilon933 EPsilon933 said. Trying to learn how to implement something new you learned takes time. So, no need to be diswayed from doing them if they do not appear to be helpful to you now. Usually, the biggest thing with being new to melee is simply building up the baseline ability to move your character in the way you want to move them. Practice and keep doing it. I would say its not uncommon for someone to spent a couple of months tryihng to get use to this stuff.

Even then you might still make mistakes short hopping with fox ( no idea who you are playing).

one thing which many people find helpful in speeding up your ability to use aerials is the c-stick. Which you do no get in training mode. Only vs mode.

Also, don't do training mode. If you need to do stuff on your own with no CPU interruptions, use the single player glitch. If you need to go against CPUs, do NOT use lvl 9s because they get you into really bad habits. I use lvl 7s, but some people like to use lvl 1s.

You're just starting out. It's ok to make mistakes. Wavedash/whatever as often as you want, you'll eventually figure out when and when not to use the right ATs.

I think it's a matter of getting used to and paying attention to in game. I used to ne er use up tilt with falco while it's one of the most important defensive moves he has. When i was playing games i really paued attention to where i could get an uptilt and i started to use more in good situations. Try to see when you're maybe able to trick your opponent with some wavedashing movement. If you get hit it's no problem. Then you know it wasn't good at that moment. After a while you'll notice when it's usefull.

The first thing to do is learn to multishine. Once you can do five in a row, you can move on to learning how to SHFFL aerials. Doesn't matter what character you use, this is how you do it.

No but seriously, watch some videos and try to mimick the way good players approach or use tech.

Also it doesn't matter what CPU you use as long as you understand the distinction between it's behavior and what a human would do. Every level CPU has patterns. So don't listen to people saying not to use lv 9 CPUs. In an interview, Westballz said he did a lot of his practice on lv 9s back in the day.
