how are you guys able to do the up tilt on the ground without jumping up? Sometimes slowly moving the circle pad diagonally up works but still might lead to a jump. So, any tips on doing up tilts easily? My method is initiating an attack before THEN moving into an up tilt.

You can change the control settings to remove circle pad jumping.

Many people turn off Tap Jump in the Controls settings to make up tilts easier. That means that the circle pad no longer makes you jump and you have to use a button instead. I actually use Tap Jump because I'm afraid if I turn it off I will not be able to get used to it.

Yep, turn off tap jump. You'll SD a number of times out of habit trying to jump with the circle pad when recovering but after about an hour, you'll get used to it. Tap jump off presents a bigger advantage as you now have complete control over your utilts and minimize the possibility of accidentally jumping as you've said. Give it a try.

You won't ever get used to it if you never try it for an extended amount of time. Give it about an hour or so and you'll come along.

In Brawl with the Gamecube controller, I always left tap jump on and rarely had any problems doing Utilts and Uairs. For the 3DS, the Circle Pad is just too sensitive. Turn that crap off and never look back!

If you want to up-tilt without turning off tap jump you will have to get used to sliding the circle pad / analog stick slightly up and then pressing attack. This is the more old school way to approach it if you still want tap jump on. Stick to whatever feels most natural to you.
