Hello everyone! I recently picked up a Wii U and Smash. I used to play a fair amount of Melee with my friends, but never really dived very deep into it. Well now I am playing Smash 4 Wii U and I enjoy playing online and want to improve and get better at the game. I main ZSS, but that doesn't really matter. Anyway I have trouble doing up-tilts. I have tap-jump disabled, but I can never seen to do it right, I always end up doing an up-smash or something. How do you properly do an up-tilt? Do you press up and A at the same exact time, or do you have to be holding up before hand, and if so, how do you avoid doing a smash? Thanks for the help! Please let me know how you do this!

No you do not press the inputs at the same time. Pressing Direction + A performs smash attacks. If you want to avoid smash attacking, you have to mind your inputs.
The two ways to perform any tilt is to: a.) tilt slightly in the direction you want to perform said tilt and press A, or B.) already be in the process of holding the direction of the tilt and press A.

Pretty much this. You can practice by tilting the analog stick very slowly, then pressing A, and just keep increasing the speed at which you do this until you get a feel for what the up tilt "feels" like - i.e. where the threshold is before the input becomes that for a smash. You'll also figure out how quickly you can pull out a tilt without buffering it.

Well, that's how I personally learned how to tilt reliably, anyway. You just keep doing it until it becomes muscle memory.

I have done what KoRLumen and Xermo have said and it works, you have to practice and you have to be aware of your inputs. soon you will learn how a tilt feels and it will be second nature..... BUT... if you want an easy way out.......... map it to the c-stick. but i would suggest learning both.

Adding it to your C-stick allows you to jump and move forward while attacking back (Bair) (and other small stuff like that)

But i feel its quicker doing tilts on the analog stick when on ground.
But When in air, i use C-stick.

To practice tilts, play in training Mode in-till you get the hang of it, then play against a Cpu (lvl 5 or whatever you want) and try your best to do only tilts, keep doing it in-till if feels natural. (thats what i did)

It also helps to turn off tap jump if your wanting an easier up tilt. In the heat of a smash battle it can get pretty hectic and disabling tap jump allows you to tilt up on the stick quickly without jumping towards your target un-intentionally. trained professionals can master slight pressing up but if you dont have the time to train your brain that rigorously this control change can assist you.
